Richie Towell was the Airtricity / SWAI Player of the Month for August last year but will he still be at Oriel Park by the end of this summer?

Dundalk midfielder Richie Towell has been linked with a move away from Oriel Park in today’s Irish Independent.

As part of a feature on the top 50 transfer targets this summer, the 23-year-old features in number 42 with the paper claiming interest from Wigan, Burnley and Ipswich Town.

The Indo speculate a price tag of €350,000, having described Towell as the League of Ireland’s best player. They insist that it is just a matter of whether the deal happens now or at the end of the Irish season.

Ipswich boss and former Ireland manager Mick McCarthy was at Oriel Park earlier this month for the club’s Europa League fixture against Jeunesse Esch leading to speculation that Towell may be on his way to Portman Road.

Gerry McShane reports that his former Dowdallshill GFC team-mate Vincent McKevitt – who captained the club to a Junior Championship title in recent years – is a proud Wigan fan.

There can’t be too many of them in the area so congratulations Vincent, savour this moment.

For those who are living under a rock, underdogs Wigan pulled off one of the greatest FA Cup final shocks of all time when Ben Watson’s 90th minute header earned them a 1-0 victory over Manchester City at Wembley yesterday, earning the minnows the first trophy of their 81 year history.

As well as for his exploits on the GAA field, Vincent gained some prominence in 2010 when he and fellow Dowdallshill man Stewart Agnew brought out the track ‘Wee County With The Big Heart’ prior to Louth’s Leinster final appearance against Meath.
