Fair play Hoeys

People the length and breadth of the country have done little else today other than discuss Brian O’Driscoll’s exclusive from the British and Irish Lions squad for Saturday’s crucial final Test against Australia.

With that in mind, we thought this piece of advertising from local DIY store Hoey’s was worth sharing.

Meanwhile, on the Dublin Road

Anyone who is into their rugby will be looking forward to the British and Irish Lions’ first Test match against Australia on Saturday morning.

It appears some local fans are particularly excited though after placing a toy lion – similar to the one carried on to the pitch before each game by the Lions captain Sam Warburton – up a tree on the Dublin Road.

It certainly made a few people take a second glance when spotted this morning. Thanks to Graham McNally for the picture.

When the Lion was just a cub…

Rob Kearney made his first start of the current tour for the British and Irish Lions in their defeat to the Brumbies today.

A picture of the Carlingford man has emerged from his time playing with Dundalk U-12s though and has recently been posted on the Dundalk RFC Facebook page.

Included in the photo are… Front l-r: Damian Murphy, Thomas Campbell, Robert Kearney, Rory O’Hagan, Ross Malone. Back l-r: Michael McArdle, Kevin Byrne, Dean Hearty, Barry Cumiskey, Robin McGee.

Below is a more recent picture of Kearney, as he and his Lions team-mates warm up for their first Test match against Australia on Saturday morning.

Everyone from this part of the world with even the smallest amount of interest in rugby will be anxious to see Rob Kearney get some playing time for the British and Irish Lions this summer.

The Willville man has made it easier for the whole nation to keep track of his exploits though, having signed up to keep a weekly diary for the Irish Independent.

The first installment of Kearney’s journals is in today’s newspaper.

Either way, the former Cooley Kickhams clubman has come a long way since his last time Down Under with the Irish U-19s when he kept a similar blog, only for The Dundalk Democrat on that occasion.

Kearney goes back to his roots

Rob Kearney might be one of the world’s best rugby players nowadays but he has never forgotten his Cooley roots. Indeed, the British and Irish Lions full back proved just as much yesterday when he helped the charity Concern out with a bit of digging in the Phoenix Park.

Kearney has been heavily involved with Concern for a number of years now and even visited Ethiopia with the charity two years ago.

Kearney the Welsh wonder?

It appears Sky Sports are a little confused about Rob Kearney’s nationality.

In their infographic on today’s British and Irish Lions squad announcement, the sports channel had the Carlingford man down as Welsh.

Kearney might have experience of livestock from his time growing up on a farm but there’s little doubt that it’s Irish blood flowing through his veins.
