Hunterstown see off Birr to book place in Leinster final

hunterstown%20rovers%20crestJust like the Geraldines did so in the intermediate grade, Hunterstown Rovers yesterday booked their place in the Leinster Club JFC final after beating Birr by 2-15 to 0-6 in Offaly.

A Ryan Burns goal on 12 minutes set the Mid-Louth men on their way as they led by 1-6 to 0-2 at the break.

Hunterstown then added three more points on the restart before Alan Landy grabbed a second goal on 39 minutes to effectively seal in the game as they coasted to victory with six further points late on.

They now meet Kildare’s Two Mile House in Newbridge in two weeks’ time.

Hunterstown Rovers: Alan Fedigan; Brian Matthews, Ciaran Carrie, Paddy Matthews; Martin Lennon 0-1, Keith Brennan, David Finn 0-1; Tony McKenna, Conor Matthews; Maurice O’Sullivan 0-1, Paul Carrie 0-4, Brendan Lennon 0-1; Alan Landy 1-1, Ryan Burns 1-3, Padraig Matthews 0-1. Subs: David Fedigan 0-1 for Padraig Matthews, Richie Taaffe 0-1 for K Brennan, Robbie McNiece for M Lennon, Niall Taaffe for M O’Sullivan, Robert Clarke for A Landy.

You have to sand it to those Hunterstown lads!

There aren’t too many open top buses around Louth so Hunterstown Rovers took things into their own hands following Sunday’s Junior Championship victory over Naomh Fionnbarra.

In order to celebrate the win, the team hopped on the back of Patsy Carberry’s sand and gravel lorry to do a few laps of the area with the Christy Bellew Cup.

It was certainly different, that’s for sure.

Hunterstown Rovers celebrate their JFC success

It was a weekend to remember for Hunterstown Rovers and Pearse Óg as they claimed the Junior Championship and Senior Hurling Championship titles in Dunleer yesterday.

Hunterstown comfortably overcame Naomh Fionnbarra on a 3-16 to 1-5 scoreline to claim their first junior title since 1987 and their first championship success since their Intermediate Championship win in 1999.

The win for last season’s Division Three champions was also fitting considering it was the 20th anniversary of their 1993 Intermediate Championship success and the 40th anniversary of their 1973 Junior Championship triumph.

Meanwhile, Pearse Óg made club history by retaining the Senior Hurling Championship for the first time after beating Knockbridge on a 2-9 to 1-7 scoreline.

Elsewhere, Cooley Kickhams moved a step closer to a first senior title since 1990 when they seen off the O’Connells on a 2-9 to 0-9 scoreline as goals from Patrick Sheelan and Richard Brennan in the second half proved the difference.

The peninsula outfit will have to wait to see who they meet in the Joe Ward decider of September 29th in Drogheda after the Newtown Blues and St Patrick’s drew 0-9 apiece in their semi-final on Saturday, with Stephen Moonan’s stoppage time free earning the Drogheda men a second bite at the cherry this Friday night in Haggardstown.
