Meenan goal sends Dundalk top

DundalkCrest2010Darren Meenan grabbed a 76th-minute winner as Dundalk beat Limerick FC 2-1 at Thomond Park last night to move back to the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division table.

It was the Lilywhites’ first victory on Shannonside for six years and went a long way towards bouncing back from the previous week’s Setanta Cup final defeat to Sligo Rovers.

Though Limerick had started in promising fashion it was Dundalk who netted the opener in the 15th minute courtesy of a Brian Gartland goal.

But the Blues were back on terms in the 30th minute when Shane Tracy converted a penalty following a foul on Danny Galbraith.

In the 57th minute Limerick’s Barry Ryan saved a Richie Towell penalty, but Dundalk remained patient as Meenan landed the decisive blow to put the Louth side top of the table.

Having lost the Setanta Cup final to Sligo Rovers last Saturday Dundalk were keen to make an early impact.

Stephen Kenny’s side have forged a reputation as a clever passing outfit, but Limerick were direct, initially causing the visitors some problems.

Only three minutes had elapsed when Robbie Williams’ long delivery was headed down by Rory Gaffney to Shane Tracy, who forced a fine save from Peter Cherrie.

Then a Tracy corner found Gaffney in a packed area, but the striker was unable to guide his header on target.

Gaffney went close in the 10th minute when his splendid 20 yard shot came within a whisker of giving Limerick the lead.

But it was Dundalk who hit the front on the quarter hour mark as Richie Towell’s free kick was met by a Dane Massey header and Gartland nudged the Lilywhites ahead.

Limerick needed Barry Ryan to make an excellent save to thwart Towell in the 28th minute before the Blues got back on terms courtesy of Tracy’s crisp left-footed spot-kick.

Ten minutes after the restart Ryan palmed away a Patrick Hoban header following a Meenan corner.

Dundalk then spurned a glorious chance when Shaun Kelly handled in the area, but Towell’s penalty was brilliantly saved by Ryan.

Meenan and Hoban had other openings, but Ryan was inspired between the sticks keeping Limerick in the contest.

But substitute David McMillan’s pass enabled Meenan to score in the 76th minute as Limerick’s spirited resistance was shrugged off.

Dundalk hoping to bounce back against Limerick

Dundalk will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways following last week’s 2-0 defeat against St Patrick’s Athletic when they host Limerick FC at Oriel Park tonight.

The Lilywhites need to win to keep the pressure on the Inchicore side, who moved six points clear at the summit following a 3-1 win over Bray Wanderers last night.

Manager Stephen Kenny has admitted that Dundalk will need to win all five of their remaining league games to have a chance of winning the league so victory is vital against a Limerick side who came from 2-0 down to beat the Lilywhites 3-2 in Thomond Park earlier this season.

Win, lose or draw, Dundalk will have little time to rest as they host Derry City on Monday night as well.

Well ain’t that a kick in the head…

oconnellkickLeinster winger David Kearney, who hails from Carlingford, left Thomond Park on a stretcher on Saturday night after receiving a vicious kick in the head from Munster’s Paul O’Connell. David, the younger brother of Irish star Rob, spent the night in hospital but was released on Sunday.

The 23-year-old will miss a few weeks of action as a result of the concussion he picked up from the blow but was quick to reassure his Twitter followers that he was okay on Sunday, saying: “Thanks 2 everybody for their kind msgs of concern! Feeling a lot better today. Grt 2 get the win down in Thomond. Serious support as per usual!”
