A lot of Dundalk fans left The Showgrounds last night delighted at their side’s 1-0 win over Sligo Rovers.

Few would have had as big a smile on his face though as Mark ‘Maxi’ McAllister.

The well-known Lilywhites supporter had a €2 bet at 250/1 that Dane Massey would be the first goalscorer and Dundalk would beat the reigning Airtricity League champions 1-0. As luck would have it, that’s exactly what happened and so Maxi was celebrating not only a famous win for his beloved club but also a handy €500 in his back pocket.

Well done Maxi, well done.

Dundalk claimed arguably their best result of the season to date when they came away from The Showgrounds with all three points after beating titleholders Sligo Rovers 1-0 in the Airtricity League last night.

Dane Massey scored the only goal of the game to help Stephen Kenny’s side bounce back to winning ways following last Friday night’s disappointing defeat at home to UCD.

The left back volleyed home from 20 yards in the 41st minute and it was nothing short of what the visitors deserved.

Both sides finished the game with 10 men with Sligo’s Anthony Elding sent-off midway through the second half for an off the ball incident and Dundalk captain Stephen O’Donnell joining him on the sidelines when he picked up a second booking deep into stoppage time.

The Lilywhites were full value for their win, however, and it arguably should have been more comfortable with Patrick Hoban hitting the post with a 78th minute penalty after John Mountney had been fouled by goalkeeper Gary Rogers.

It mattered little in the end though and now Dundalk can look forward to their FAI Cup clash at home to Phoenix FC on Friday night having consolidated their push for a European place next season.

The Drogs are at it again…

drogsFresh from their antics against Sligo Rovers in The Showgrounds last weekend, it appears Drogheda Utd are not content with just upsetting the folk of one town.

According to Danny O’Connell, anyone who types the word ‘Dundalk’ into their club forum, will see it automatically changed to the word ‘craptown’.

Sticks and stones and all that…
