St Joseph’s GFC to remember 1990 side this weekend

St Joseph’s GFC in Dromiskin will remember one of its great sides of yesteryear this weekend.

On Saturday night a celebration night will be held to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the club’s Intermediate Championship success of 1990.

A DVD of the victory over Naomh Malachi will be shown on the night.

Events get underway in the Joe’s clubrooms from 9pm with finger food served and live music.

Louth GAA mourns passing of former Supporters’ Club chairman Frank McDermott

The death occurred earlier this week of former Louth GAA Supporters’ Club chairman, Frank McDermott.

From Woodland Drive in Ard Easmuinn, Frank passed away peacefully in the nearby Castleross Nursing Home on Monday.

He was well known for his involvement in local GAA circles, particularly with his beloved Clan na Gael GFC. He also managed a number of teams over the years, including Naomh Malachi.

Beloved husband of the late Betty and dear father of Marie, Frankie, Anne and Jim. He will be sadly missed by his loving sons, daughters, sons-in-law Chris and Gerry, daughters-in-law Debbie and Rosalind, grandchildren Andrew, Sarah, Steven, Mark, Rory, Niall, Conor, Shauna, Caoimhe, and Alannah, great-grandchildren Shauna, Jack and Evelyn, sisters Sr. Enda Marie and Sr. Rose Marie, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

He is reposing at the residence of his daughter Marie Noonan at 17 Rockmount Gardens on the Carrick Road from 2pm to 8pm this evening before removal on Thursday morning at 11.15am to St Patrick’s Cathedral, arriving for Mass at 12 noon. Funeral afterwards to St Patrick’s Cemetery.

History was made on Sunday last when local radio station Dundalk FM provided full coverage of the Louth Ladies Senior GAA Final from Castlebellingham.

It was the first time the showpiece of the women’s game was broadcast live with commentry from Dermot Woods and match analysis from 2003 Naomh Malachi winning captain Orlaith Kirk and Patsi McGuinness who led Cooley to Championship success two years ago.
The game itself turned out to be a very one-sided affair with Stabannon emerging comfortable winners over the Newtown Blues by 9-11 to 0-4 while in the opening game Geraldines also had it all their own way in beating Naomh Martin by 7-12 to 0-05 in the Intermediate final.

Naomh Malachi GFC granted permission for floodlights at Courtbane

naomhmalachiNaomh Malachi GFC have been granted conditional planning permission to install floodlighting at their pitch at Courtbane in Hackballscross.

The border club hope to erect six floodlights on the perimeter of the main pitch as part of their plans to develop their facilities.

The border club have applied to Louth County Council for planning permission to erect six floodlights on the perimeter of the main pitch.

The council are due to decide on the matter by April 30th.

County champions St Patrick’s have been paired with Mattock Rangers and the O Raghallaigh’s in the group stages of this year’s Carrickdale Hotel Senior Football Championship.

The Lordship men were drawn in Group 4 following last night’s draw in Darver and will face a stiff test from the outset against a Mattock side who won back-to-back titles as recently as 2010 an an ever-improving O Raghallaigh’s side.

Elsewhere, last year’s beaten finalists the Dreadnots were drawn in Group 1 alongside St Mary’s and Naomh Mairtin while intermediate champions the Sean O’Mahony’s have been drawn in Group 2 alongside the O’Connells and Cooley Kickhmas.

Meanwhile, there will be a local derby in Group 3 where both Dundalk Gaels and the Geraldines have been paired alongside 2013 champions the Newtown Blues.

Meanwhile, in the CTI Business Solutions Intermediate Championship last year’s beaten finalists St Fechin’s have been drawn in Group 4 alongside Na Piarsaigh and St Mochta’s.

In Group 1 last season’s relegated outfit Kilkerley Emmets have been paired with fellow former senior heavyweights Clan na Gael and Glyde Rangers while in Group 2 are Naomh Malachi, Hunterstown Rovers and St Joseph’s. Dundalk Young Irelands are in Group 3 with St Brides and junior champions Oliver Plunketts.

In the Junior Championship, Roche Emmets will be hoping to bounce back to the intermediate grade straight away but face a tough pairing in Group 1 alongside Naomh Fionnbarra and the Sean McDermotts.

In Group 2 are the county’s newest club Cuchulainn Gaels, the John Mitchels and St Nicholas while Group 3 contain sides who all either won the Christy Bellew Cup or came close to it on numerous occasions in the Noughties – St Kevin’s, Dowdallshill and the Westerns.

Finally, Group 4 is made up of Lannleire, the Wolfe Tones, Glen Emmets and Stabannon Parnells.

For all three grades the winners and runners up of Group 1 will face the winners and runners up of Group 3 with the winners and runners-up of Groups 2 and 4 doing likewise.

In the Senior Hurling Championship, holders Knockbridge have a bye with Mattock Rangers facing Pearse Og and St Fechin’s playing Naomh Moninne.

Naomh Malachi hosting Tour De Lu cycle event

Following on from the success of their cycle to Dublin last year, Naomh Malachi GFC are hitting the road again this year with a 100km “Tour De Lu” cycle on Sunday August 3rd.

The cycle will take them from Courtbane via Knockbridge, Castlebellingham, Annagassan, Clogherhead, Dunleer, Ardee, Tallanstown, Louth Village back through Knockbridge and back home to Courtbane.

The club are asking if their fellow GAA clubs in Louth would sponsor two cyclists to take part in the cycle.

While it is aimed at novice/beginner cyclists, a full back-up service of repair, medical and marshals will accompany those taking part on the day. Each cyclist will receive a limited edition cycling jersey to mark the occasion and full refreshments will be served after. There will be a presentation made to all cyclists later that evening in the clubrooms with live music and light refreshments. All welcome.

Registration fee is €50 per person. You can register right up until the morning of the cycle however it is recommended that you register before Friday, July 18th to be guaranteed a limited edition Naomh Malachi Tour de Lú cycling jersey.

County champions the Newtown Blues will face their Drogheda neighbours the O Raghallaigh’s and Dundalk Gaels in the group stages of this year’s Carrickdale Hotel SFC.

The draw for the championship was made last night in Darver with the three teams being paired in group one.

Last year’s runners-up Cooley Kickhams have been drawn in group four – arguably the group of death – with the O’Connells and Mattock Rangers while their neighbours St Patrick’s will be in group two alongside Naomh Mairtin and the Dreadnots.

Meanwhile, newly-promoted the Geraldines have been given a kind draw having been placed in group three with St Mary’s and Kilkerley Emmets.

In the Anglo Printers IFC, the stand out group is group two which includes the Dundalk trio of Sean O’Mahony’s, Dundalk Young Irelands and Clan na Gael.

The other big Dundalk club, Na Piarsaigh, have been drawn in group one with St Fechin’s and St Joseph’s while newly-promoted Hunterstown Rovers are in group three with St Mochta’s and Naomh Malachi.

Finally, in group four Glyde Rangers, St Brides and Roche Emmets will all be vying for a return to senior football following relegation in recent years.

Elsewhere in the Integral Fitness & Leisure JFC, Dundalk outfit Dowdallshill will be in a four-team group in group four that also includes the Oliver Plunketts, Stabannon Parnells and the Sean McDermotts.
