Dundalk FC last night announced the capture of local defender Shane Grimes.

The Muirhevnamor man, who captained neighbours Drogheda Utd last season, started his career at Oriel Park under Jim Gannon back in 2005. He remained at the club until 2008 when he was part of the side that won promotion to the Premier Division under John Gill.

The left back then moved to Monaghan Utd the following season where he excelled under Mick Cooke and was a key member of the squad which got promoted in 2011 with Roddy Collins as manager.

He then moved to Drogheda Utd in 2012, where he won an EA Sports Cup medal and also played in three cup finals in 2013.

Speaking to dundalkfc.com after completing the move, Grimes couldn’t hide his delight at re-signing for the club and is looking forward to the new campaign.

“I am absolutely over the moon. I really am. They’re my hometown club and I am really delighted to sign. I didn’t want to leave the first time and I’m just glad to be back. There’s no better feeling than pulling on your hometown jersey and I can’t wait to do that again. Playing for the club has been a dream and I can’t wait to get started back already.

“Stephen (Kenny) tried to sign me in the summer but it didn’t happen because of the situation and that. I was delighted when he rang again and was more than happy to come back. I am looking forward to the new season. I just want to win everything in front of me. The lads are all the same though. They’ll be wanting to win all the tournaments we enter and I am glad to be a part of that. It’s a new challenge for me and it’s great to be back.”

Grimes leaves the Aviva empty-handed following a tight squeeze

grimes

After the way in which Dundalk lost out to Drogheda United in the FAI Cup semi-final last month there would have been very few from the north end of the county cheering on our Boyneside rivals in the Aviva Stadium for yesterday’s final.

One Drogheda player who would have expected at least some local support is Muirhevnamor’s Shane Grimes, who has made the left-back spot his own for Mick Cooke’s side this season.

A dramatic conclusion to the game saw Sligo Rovers inflict a third cup final defeat of 2013 on the Drogs, leaving Grimes and co empty-handed.

Grimes might have left the stadium without a winner’s medal but he definitely got cupped… a feel of, as the picture above shows.

There was better news for ex-Dundalk manager Terry Eviston who led the Raheny United ladies team to victory in the WFAI Cup final, as they beat Castlebar 3-2 after extra-time.

LMFM presenter’s verbal attack on Drogheda chairman goes viral

A video clip of LMFM presenter Gerry Kelly launching a verbal attack on Drogheda United chairman Jim Agnew has gone viral on the internet.

The clip, uploaded to YouTube on Saturday, comes in the week leading into the Hunky Dory Park outfit’s FAI Ford Cup final appearance against Sligo Rovers.

Despite having a cup final to look forward to there is a split amongst Drogheda supporters over the decision to allow manager Mick Cooke to leave at the end of the season.

In the clip, recorded after Drogheda’s 1-0 win over Bohemians on Friday night, Kelly tells Agnew “to get out of this f***ing club, you’re not a Drogheda man.”

He tells him and the nine other members of the club to “f*** off to Dundalk” before branding the chairman a “f***ing disgrace.”

Kelly, who presents Sunday Sport and the Late Lunch on LMFM, is a former board member of the Boynesiders.
