Dundalk FC defender Andy Boyle is the club’s finalist to appear on the cover of this year’s FIFA 16 game from EA Sports.

In the last two seasons Lilywhites stars Patrick Hoban and Richie Towell have adorned the Irish cover of the popular game with Boyle hoping to make it a treble for the club.

The voting process was slightly different this year with every player from each club in the league nominated before one finalist was decided from each club.

Boyle is the selection for Dundalk but Lilywhites fans will also have the option to choose from a few other familiar faces with eight of the other finalists former Oriel Park favourites.

They include Peter Cherrie (Bray Wanderers), Michael Daly (Drogheda Utd), Ross Gaynor (Cork City), Jake Kelly (Bohemians), Shaun Kelly (Limerick FC), Mark Rossiter (Longford Town), Gary Shanahan (Galway Utd) and local teenager Ciaran O’Connor of Derry City, who is still on the books of the club.

The three other finalists are Brandon Miele (Shamrock Rovers), John Russell (Sligo Rovers) and Kenny Browne (St Patrick’s Athletic).

The two winning players will be unveiled on Wednesday September 23rd, with the exclusive cover available to download for free via easports.com/fifa from Thursday 24th of September. Once you’ve printed out your preferred sleeve, you can simply replace the existing cover in your FIFA 16 pack and start playing with your very own League of Ireland cover stars.

Steve Staunton the World Cup record breaker

42

We might not be there but that doesn’t mean that World Cup fever isn’t set to grip the nation ahead of tonight’s opening game between Brazil and Croatia at 9pm.

Between betting, busters and just sheer general interest, we’ll all have our say on the tournament over the next few weeks.

The big question remains whether Dundalk’s very own Steve Staunton will have his record broken.

The former Liverpool and Aston Villa star – who played at Italia 90, USA 94 and Japan and South Korea in 2002 – has drawn more World Cup games than any player in the history of the tournament with eight.

The stat was revealed by the good folks over at Balls.ie, who also revealed that Robbie Keane (3) has scored as many World Cup goals as Cristiano Ronaldo (2), Lionel Messi (1) and Wayne Rooney (0) combined and that Ireland hold the record for the highest ever finish at a World Cup despite not winning a match (1990).

Dundalk’s Patrick Hoban is set to appear on the cover of FIFA 14.

The Galway native was voted for the huge honour by Airtricity League fans in recent weeks on extratime.ie

He will be joined on the cover by Limerick’s Shane Treacy. Ironically, the two players will go head to head tomorrow night when Dundalk host Limerick at Oriel Park.

Hoban and Treacy seen off competition from the likes of Rafael Cretaro, Jason Byrne and Killian Brennan in order to appear on the cover alongside Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

The cover featuring the duo will be available to download from easportsfootball.com tomorrow when the game goes on sale.

FIFA 14 will be released at midnight with the Dundalk Gamestop and Xtra-vision branches opening late for those who want to get their hands on it.
