Local events raise €50,000 for charity

The committee behind the two events, which raised €50,000

The organising committee of the Dundalk Santa Fun Run on November 29th and Charity Lunch in the Crowne Plaza last Friday have announced that the total funds raised at both events was €50,000, including in-kind toys valued at €5000.

This brings the total funds raised for local charities to €80,000 since the event was launched in 2012.

The Santa Fun Run was a phenomenal success with in excess of 5,000 Santa’s taking part.  The feel good factor it brought to the town could not be measured in monetary terms with a sea of red kick starting the festive season. An application has been submitted to the Guinness Book of Records to determine whether Dundalk will be recorded as the official World Record breakers.

Five nominated charities – The Men’s Shed, North Louth Hospice, SNAP, Lordship Children’s Respite Centre and SOSAD – received an interim payment of €8,000 each and a further 13 local charities received a donation of €500.  Sponsorship money is still being collected and it is anticipated that a final payment will be made in January.

In addition, Dundalk Chamber of Commerce received a total of six nominations to send a local child and their family to a trip to Euro Disney. In what was a very difficult decision, the committee awarded the voucher for Euro Disney valued at €2,000 to David O’Hare and his family.  The other five children each received vouchers valued at €250, which will be spent in local shops.  The toys were donated to St Bridget’s School and local charities such as Women’s Aid, St Vincent De Paul and Dundalk Rotary Club.

Paddy Matthews president of Dundalk Chamber of Commerce reiterated his thanks to the local community and businesses for supporting the event and making it a tremendous success.

He said that all money raised has been used to the benefit of local charities and children and the Santa Run itself really helped promote all that is good about Dundalk and Co Louth. The committee is already looking forward to next year and hopes to build on this year’s momentum to create an event better event for the community.

Nicola McGee, Cal Moran, Dearbhla Mackin and Sonya Levins all participated in the successful World Record Riverdance performance in Dublin on Sunday

A number of locals played their part in setting a new world record in Dublin yesterday for the largest performance of Riverdance.

Almost 1,700 dancers took part in the exhibition on the Samuel Beckett Bridge in Dublin, including Sonya Levins, Cal Moran, Nicola McGee and her sister Dearbhla Mackin.

The record attempt was organised as part of The Gathering, a year-long tourism drive to entice people around the world with Irish links to visit the country.

Roche Emmets earned themselves a place in the Guinness Book of World Records yesterday as 1,204 people turned out for the world’s largest GAA training session on one pitch.

The North Louth club made the historic achievement as part of a family fun day at Pairc de Roiste.

Just 14 people ensured they made the achievement though, as they pipped the previous record of 1,189 that had turned out at the Na Fianna club in Glasnevin in Dublin in May 2012.

Thanks to Niall Carroll for this superb shot of most of those who took part in the World Record bid.

Roche Emmets will attempt to win a place in the Guinness Book of Records this Sunday for the most number of people to take part in a GAA training session on the one pitch.

As part of a fun day, the record-breaking attempt will be combined with an OgSport football blitz and a fun day.

The event will run from 2.30pm to 6pm and will feature a blitz for U-7s to U-12s, with teams from throughout the county invited.

For the record attempt, a fun training session will take place with the aim being to get as many groups of 50 people as possible into segments on the pitch.

The current record stands at 1,189 – a feat that was achieved by Na Fianna GAA club in Glasnevin, Co Dublin last May.

The World Record attempt takes place at 4.30pm and representatives from the Guinness Book of Records will be on hand to judge the proceedings.

Gavin Duffy, who managed Roche in their stint on Celebrity Bainisteoir a couple of years ago, will be guest of honour on the day.

Anyone have the number for the Guinness Book of Records?

KatiieMurphyHas anyone the number for the Guinness Book of Records? Because it appears that one was set in Dundalk yesterday after Katie Murphy completed the “longest walk ever”.

You’ve got to love Dundalk people’s ability to exaggerate. Like the guy in the Marshes yesterday who was overheard saying that there’s nothing worse than having to queue for food when you’re hungover. Yeah, because that’s definitely worse than cancer or something…
