Louth County Council have issued a flood warning for later today in Blackrock, Dundalk, Drogheda and Carlingford.

There will be a high tide and threat of flooding from 12.40pm to 2.40pm.

Bellurgan and Ballagan are also believed to be at risk of flooding during this period.

Main Street in Blackrock and The Loakers were closed to traffic at the weekend due to flooding, while Dundalk Port, the Inner Relief Road and the Fairgreen areas of Dundalk were also affected.

The floods are not expected to be as severe as last month but people are urged to be cautious at all times and not to drive through flooded streets unnecessarily.

Dundalk couple settle action with local authorites over flooding of their home

The local couple who sued Louth County Council and Dundalk Town Council after their home was flooded have settled their High Court action.

The home of Noel and Rosemary Rice at Mill Road, Dundalk, Co Louth, was flooded on December 3rd, 2005, in what they described as a “mini tsunami”.

The flooding caused considerable damage to the interior and exterior of the home, with the couple claiming that it was caused after the local authorities released water that had accumulated due to a blockage in the river at the Ault bridge, Castleblayney Road, Dundalk, located upstream from their home. The blockage was caused by debris, including rubbish.

The release of water caused the river to break its banks and flood their property, they claimed.

They alleged negligence by the local authorities in allowing the water release.

The claims were denied.

Both councils pleaded the flood damage was caused by an act of God and no legal liability attached to them. It was also pleaded the water level at the bridge had risen to such a height in early December 2005 it represented a danger to the public.

On the third day of the action yesterday, Ms Justice Marie Baker was told it had been settled. No terms of settlement were disclosed.

Thanks to local videographer Gerry Duffy for sharing this superb shot of three men sitting on the upper levels of the Clermont Arms in Blackrock as waves crashed onto the Main Street.

Gerry said: “What was the special in the Clermont Arms this evening? This brilliant pic was captured today during the floods along Main Street, Blackrock.

“We hope the 2 lads landed something after all their hard efforts!

“We sincerely hope that the businesses along the sea front didn’t suffer too much damage…”

Following a series of floods caused by high tides in the area today, Louth County Council and Dundalk Town Council have been advised by the OPW that there is a High Tide Advisory Notice between 23.30 tonight and 2.30am tomorrow (Saturday January 4th).

It is not anticipated that this will be as severe as the flood event which occurred this morning, that led to major problems in Dundalk, Drogheda, Blackrock and Carlingford. Despite this the councils advise that there may be some localised road flooding during the high tide in coastal areas prone to flooding including Dundalk, Blackrock and Carlingford.
