A number of local businesses have been fined by the Revenue Commissioners for tax offences in recent months.
A Knockbridge-based contractor made a settlement of €98,261.02 for underdeclaration of VAT and Relevant Contracts Tax while a Dunleer-based fruit distributor was also fined €53,136 for the underdeclaration of PAYE and PRSI.
Smaller penalties were also imposed on Duffner Brothers jewellers of 40 Clanbrassil Street, Memco Ltd, who operate Lismar B&B at 8-9 Stapleton Place and Welby’s Restaurant Ltd in the Long Walk Shopping Centre, who were all fined €1,250 each for a failure to lodge corporation tax returns.
The businesses were all named in the tax defaulters’ list by the Revenue for the period from July to September 2013.
Another local company fined were Glack Contracts Ltd of Cookstown Cross, Carrick Road, Ardee. They were fined €5,000 for a failure to lodge corporation tax returns.
Meanwhile, taxi driver Damien McKeown of 295 Beechmount Drive, Dundalk, coal man Gerard Mulligan of 33 Fatima Park, Dundalk, painter/decorator Kevin Murray of 81 Clonmore, Hall Street, Ardee and director Elias Marwan of Sheelagh, Hackballscross, Dundalk, were fined €2,500 each for misuse of marked mineral oil.
There was also a €2,500 fine for Gerard Joyce of 21 Road Two, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, Co Louth for the illegal selling of cigarettes.
Elsewhere, Carlingford publican Alan Johnston of Taaffe’s Pub was fined €750 for failure to hold a current liquor licence.
