Walking tour of Seatown planned

The Old Dundalk Society will host a walking tour of Seatown on Thursday August 28th.

Archaeologist Paul Gosling, a native of Dundalk who now lectures in Built Heritage at the Department of Heritage and Tourism at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, will lead the walk through one of the oldest parts of town.

The tour will commence from the Green Church at 5pm and will take around two hours.

It will deal with street names, street alignments and layouts and the role of prominent buildings such as the windmill, Seatown Castle, Quay Street railway station and St Leonard’s Garden.

The County Museum in Dundalk will once again hold its popular Walking Tour of Dundalk programme, extending the initiative from late April through to late summer.

The tours are scheduled to take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 11am from April 29th through to late summer. Previously, the programme commenced in July.

This is the fifth year that the Museum has organised the successful Walking Tour which starts off in the heart of the town.

The tour will also include numerous sites of historical importance including St Leonard’s Gardens, the Courthouse and St Patrick’s Cathedral before concluding at the Museum building on Jocelyn Street.

Museum Curator, Brian Walsh, said that the walking tour has proven to be an interesting and popular activity.

“There is great interest in the walking tour and it helps greatly in giving visitors to the museum a better background knowledge of the collections we exhibit.

“Because of this, we are also planning a walking tour with schools specifically in mind, whereby the students can take part in the Walking Tour and combine it with a visit to the museum, either on the same day or on two different days.”

Advance booking is necessary, as a minimum number of participants are required for the walking tour which costs a nominal fee of €1, and is weather dependent.
