Dundalk School of Music prepare for summer school of classes

The Dundalk School of Music will host a wide range of classes in their summer school, which runs from July 14th to August 15th.

Amongst the classes on offer are:

Introduction to Piano   €55 – over three days (Small group)

Summer group piano classes are the perfect way to explore and experience the joy of music. The emphasis of this class is ear training, keyboard skills, rhythm, phrasing, fingering, singing, movement, staff reading, improvisation and composition. Students are taught in small groups in a FUN, positive, enthusiastic atmosphere.

The school’s philosophy is that learning the piano should be a joyful, social and creative experience for children. This exciting summer program is designed to develop a foundation in the skills necessary to read music, improvise at the piano and master basic hand position, posture and technique. It also provides excellent preparation for future individual instruction in all instruments and voice.

Taster Guitar  €15 – 90 minutes ( Option to continue for the 5-weeks)

A special summer ‘taster’  guitar for students aged 8-12.  A brief, fun and friendly introduction to the instrument that will help parents to decide whether or not there is interest and commitment enough to continue with individual  or group guitar lessons in the new school year.

Music Maestros Workshop €15 – 90 minutes ( 4-8’s)

Learning and developing musical skills through;

  • Social interaction
  • Ice Breaker games to boost confidence and group activity
  • Music making, games and activities
  • Learning theory through games and activities- i.e. HAVING FUN!
  • Instrumentation development- group and individual
  • Singing as a group- developing the inner ear, voice and social skills
  • Dance and movement to enhance musical learning
  • Aural Perception- fine tuning the ear, voice and musical understanding
  • Listening and Appraising
  • Composition- enhancing a student’s creativity, imagination and widening their understanding of how music is put together and made into a structured piece
  • Performance- social, emotional, cognitive and musical development
  • Group play and development through the medium of music making, playing, games and activities.
  • Individual play and development through music

As above, focusing more on Composition games.

  • Being able to follow a graphic score and make music together by reading it
  • Composing and taking home a copy a CD copy of their achievement

  • Developing musical creativity in each student through music making.

Musical Theatre Workshop  €15 – 90 minutes  (4-8’s)

Learning how to use musical awareness and by performing and improvising using drama, emotion, movement and the voice.

Performance Skills Masterclass  €20 – 90 minutes  (14-18’S )

Open Workshop for Theatre pupils, Performers and DSM Pupils

  • An opportunity to perform examination pieces, or pieces currently working on, finding difficult, what to enhance etc.
  • Each student to perform and get feedback from instructor and class participants
  • Performances will be recorded and critiqued to use the information to better their own performance and knowledge.

Guitar Workshop €15 – 90 minutes (Intermediate plus)

A master class where students will perform before the group for constructive critique and feedback.

The workshop time will be divided into three parts:

  • Masterclass-Demos; popular songs/pieces. Techniques; dynamics, phrasing, tone etc.etc.
  • One-on-one time with participants focusing on individual players’ needs and interests
  • The one-on-one time will allow other participants time to prepare, practice, and share ideas

Flying with Strings  €40 – 4 x1 hour classes  (Violin for beginners & early stage learners ages 6-10)

  • Enjoy the fun of group class
  • Working towards playing accompaniment to recognised tunes
  • Bow games
  • Clapping/singing during tune introductions
  • Under chin plucking and bowing
  • Banjo position

Summer Sing  €35 – 3×1 hour classes (7-12’s)

Work with a professional tutor on you vocal technique in a relaxed class environment.

A popular option with many students as it offers nervous learners a small safe group to work in, whilst still allowing individual attention for everyone.

Setanta Choir prepare to celebrate the music this Sunday

A Celebrate The Music event with the Setanta Choir and guests will take place this Sunday night at 7.30pm in St Patrick’s Church in Roden Place.

Marking 36 years of choral singing the night will feature performances from Vivaldi’s Gloria as well as works from Handel, Bruckner, Fauré, Jenkins, Piazzolla and Gjeilo.

Conductor on the night will be Brian MacKay. Soprano is Aisling Kenny, Alto is Ailbhe Howard while Jennifer Murphy will be playing violin.

Róisín Dooley to host violin recital in Carlingford next month

Violinist Róisín Dooley will host a violin recital, accompanied by pianist Patrick Coyle, in the Carlingford Heritage Centre on Sunday May 11th.

The event gets underway at 3pm with music from Bach, Debussy, Chausson, Sarasate, Szymanowski, Kroll and Gershwin.

Róisín started her studies at the age of six with Teresa McArdle and later with Fr Brendan Mc Nally. From a young age Róisín took part in many music festivals including Feis Ceoil where she won numerous prizes. She was also a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland for several years.

Róisín was selected to represent Ireland at the International Millennium Music Festival in Leeds, England in 2000. Before Róisín commenced her further studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester under Wen Zhou Li, she gave her first solo recital in Carlingford. Four years later Róisín graduated with a BMus Degree.

Since graduating she enjoys performing with Castleward Opera, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the Fr McNally Chamber Orchestra. Before commencing her masters Róisín furthered her studies with Michael D’Arcy.

Róisín was also soloist with the Fr McNally Chamber Orchestra in November 2013.

Róisín is currently in her second year as a MA student in the Cork School of Music, under the tutelage of Ruxandra Petcu-Colan. This is her third and final recital for the above course.

Admission to her show on Sunday May 11th is €15 or €10 with concession.
