Former Dundalk defender Ben McLaughlin has been called up to the Ireland U-19 squad for their forthcoming game with Romania.

The 18-year-old, the grandson of former Lilywhites manager Jim, left Oriel Park in August 2012 to sign for Premier League side Everton.

The right-back penned a three-year deal with the Toffees and has been making good progress in the club’s U-21 and reserve sides under the tutelage of Alan Stubbs.

He will now be hoping that his international call-up leads to him following in the footsteps of another former League of Ireland right back, Seamus Coleman, who has developed into one of the top right-backs in the world at Goodison Park.

Ireland will take on Romania in the friendly match in Turner’s Cross in Cork on Tuesday March 4th.

Meanwhile, Georgie Poynton who will be part of Stephen Kenny’s first team plans this season having signed pro terms at Oriel Park last week, has been included in the U-17 squad for their clash with Austria on Tuesday March 4th.

Poynton has also been nominated for the U-16 Player of the Year award at the forthcoming 3/FAI International Awards on March 2nd.
