Women have been warned to be cautious about hanging their handbags from shopping trolleys following a number of attempts to steal them in recent days.

One Talk of the Town reader reported that a friend interrupted an attempted robbery of an elderly woman in Aldi on the Newry Road earlier today.

The man was described as tall with dark, messy hair, sallow skin and wearing a grey coat. It is believed he may have had an accomplice who was looking to rob another woman around the time his plot was foiled.

Everyone is urged to be vigilant of thieves in the next few weeks as the build-up to Christmas continues.
