The Dundalk hitman that Gardaí believe was behind the murder of Michael Devoy in Tallaght at the weekend is believed to have been paid €20,000 to carry out the killing.

Gardaí investigating the murder on Saturday night believe the 40-year-old was contracted by associates of crimelord Christy Kinahan to “investigate” the pub shooting of Greg Lynch outside O’Hanlon’s Bar on Dublin’s North Circular Road last October. Drug dealer Lynch, 28, and three innocent women were injured when a gunman opened fire at them outside the pub.

According to The Irish Daily Mirror, the hitman “interviewed” Devoy and a close associate more than a week ago about the attack.

Both men were “cleared” by the sinister operator but further enquiries led the enforcer to contact Devoy again and demand a further meeting on Saturday evening.

A senior source told the Mirror: “This man was a former enforcer for the Provisional IRA but more recently he has been offering his services to criminal gangs.

“He was called on by Kinahan’s associates to investigate the Lynch shooting. Devoy and an associate’s name were given to him and he interviewed the pair of them.

“This guy is quite polite and mannerly and gave the lads the all-clear.

“However, he went back and carried out further enquiries and came to the conclusion Devoy had indeed tried to kill Lynch.

“So he contacted the drug addict again and politely asked for another meeting.”

Dad-of-two Devoy was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time of his killing but was shot in the neck and head and dumped at Foxhill Lane, Bohernabreena, Tallaght, Dublin, shortly before 11pm on Saturday.

Gardaí believe that Tallaght gun victim Michael Devoy may have been murdered by a 40-year-old hitman from Dundalk.

Mr Devoy, a convicted criminal from Ballymun, suffered gun shot wounds to the head and neck and other injuries to his upper body in an attack on Saturday night.

Garda detectives on a routine patrol came across two men in the act of disposing of Mr Devoy’s body on Foxhill Road in south county Dublin on the night.

They attempted to pursue the men but they managed to flee the scene in a silver hatchback.

Gardaí only discovered the body when they returned to the scene at a quiet country lane.

Mr Devoy had been wearing a bullet proof vest when the discovery was made and gardaí say he had feared for his life.

Investigations into the killing are underway but gardaí believe a Dundalk hitman may have been behind the killing.

The individual in question was stopped on January 7th near Mr Devoy’s home and questioned at Ballymun. They are now looking to speak to the same individual in relation to the killing.

Gardaí said that the killing had all the hallmarks of a gangland hit, with Mr Devoy only released from prison two days earlier.

The Irish Cyclo Cross season is now in full swing and the latest round of the Fixx Coffeehouse Supercross Series was held in Tallaght’s Tymon Park on Sunday last. The race consisted of 9 laps of a tight circuit around the park, which was made up of a mix of path, grass and forest trail along with the usual obstacles. The recent dry weather meant that the surfaces held up well making for fast racing.

Cuchulainn riders were in the thick of the main race with Ray O’Shaughnessy in a close battle with 10 time national champion Robyn Seymour of Dublin. Early on the racing was very tight with Tim Regan of Meath forging ahead, however Seymour by lap 4 had taken the lead and started to build a sizable advantage. Ray after a somewhat slower start, began moving his way up the field and by mid race was lapping faster than Seymour. On the seventh lap he moved into second position and remained there, finishing just over a minute behind the winner.
Another clubman Aidan MacDonald came home in 6th position to take first vet on the day, beating the National Vets Champion Peter McConville of Newry. Also in the top 12 and 4th vet was Johnny McCabe.Vet Gerry McCabe and Gary Shiels also completed the race. In the B race Declan McCabe had a good outing, finishing in 6th position.

Three in 10 Dundalk smokers smoke illegal cigarettes

More than three in every 10 smokers in Dundalk are smoking dodgy or illegal cigarettes, according to a new survey by MS Intelligence.

The new research reveals that 30.1% of smokers in Dundalk opt not to buy legal packets of cigarettes – the seventh worse record in Ireland and above the national average of 27.9%.

Drogheda and Tallaght were the worst offenders at 32.8%.

The data, by market survey firm MS Intelligence, was gathered by analysing 5,000 used cigarette boxes and confirming no tax had been paid on them.

A spokesman for the researchers said: “The research, which was carried out by collecting empty packs from 22 of Ireland’s largest towns and cities, shows that the level of ‘Non Irish Duty Paid’ is still at over one in four.

“However, excise increases on cigarettes and roll your own tobacco in Budget 2012 saw a surge in the attractiveness of the illegal tobacco market.”

Future of Dundalk Xtra-vision secured

The future of Dundalk’s Xtra-vision store at the Long Walk appears to have been secured after the company was sold yesterday to Hilco Capital Ireland for an undisclosed sum.

The movie rental chain went into receivership in late April, blaming the growth in online streaming and piracy for diminished profits, as well as large rent bills.

However, the chain’s business, stock and head office in Tallaght have now been taken over by Hilco, who also recently acquired HMV.

Yesterday, Talk of the Town reported that HMV was not going to be reopening in Dundalk but Hilco CEO Paul McGowan’s assessment yesterday that Xtra-vision was “a good fit alongside HMV” suggests that the company may look to merge the two brands together in certain areas.

Xtra-vision already sells a number of DVDs, boxsets and CDs and will be expected to expand on this now that it has become part of Hilco’s international entertainment retail division.

While a small number of store closures are expected, the future of the Dundalk store would appear to be secure. One of Hilco’s outstanding problems is renegotiating store leases with landlords but that would appear not to be an issue locally with Xtra-vision having recently relocated from the Adelphi to the Long Walk.

Dundalk FC’s Leinster Senior Cup quarter-final clash with Shamrock Rovers has been scheduled for Monday May 27th in Tallaght Stadium at 8pm.

With the two sides also facing each other in the EA Sports Cup next Tuesday May 21st, that means Stephen Kenny faces two trips to face his former club in the space of six days.

The two sides also met earlier this month in Tallaght, with the Hoops coming out on top 1-0.

Meanwhile, something that might be interesting for Dundalk fans is the fact that former striker Mark Quigley is being linked with a return to the club from Rovers, should the Hoops manage to resign Gary Twigg.
