Ah here!

Job ad 2013

Dundalk IT have published a new advert seeking a table tennis coach for the coming year.

The new coach will be responsible for increasing awareness and participation in the sport throughout the college, as well as externally.

What’s the problem with that you might ask? Well the wage is a not-to-be-sniffed-at €32 an hour, that’s what!

Now I’ve nothing against table tennis but let’s face it it’s not exactly or national sport or anywhere near it.

Don’t get me wrong, Dundalk IT have an admirable record when it comes to table tennis. In fact, they’ve been All-Ireland champions more than any other third level college in the last few years.

Having said all that though, is it justifiable that €32 an hour is paid from taxpayers’ funds for something as trivial as table tennis?

Even if the new coach ends up working just 10 hours a week – not an over-the-top prospect considering the job description – that is a tidy little sum of €320 a week, something many people don’t receive for far more work.

Let us know your opinion.

Meanwhile, the full job description can be found on the Dundalk IT website here.
