Louth to host Armagh in National League opener

Louth crest

Louth will kick-off their National Football League campaign next year with a home tie against Armagh on Sunday February 2nd.

They will then host Laois a week later on Sunday February 9th before their first trip of the campaign away to Down on Saturday March 1st.

They will then face Monaghan away a week later on Sunday March 9th before hosting Galway on Sunday March 16th.

The longest trip of the campaign will then see them travel to face 2012 All-Ireland winners Donegal on Sunday March 30th before the campaign concludes with a home clash against Meath on Sunday April 7th.

The above schedule is provisional at present but is unlikely to change a great deal. With the possibility that the Down and Monaghan fixtures could be played in Newry and Inniskeen, that could mean that the only real travelling Louth supporters would have to do in 2014 is to Donegal.

Local man fired by Northern Trust for operating rogue scheme, which saw €200,000 vanish

Northern-Trust

A LOCAL man with family connections to politics in the area has lost his job at US financial services firm Northern Trust’s Dublin office after the company uncovered a rogue scheme, which saw over €200,000 vanish.

According to a report on Sunday, a senior Sinn Féin figure is thought to have helped in uncovering the operation.

In a statement to the Sunday Independent at the weekend, the company said: “Northern Trust can confirm that An Garda Siochana is investigating an alleged fraudulent action. The action affects a small number of individuals and, based on our understanding, at present amounts to approximately €200,000.”

Sources told the newspaper that the money was invested by a number of individuals and that Sinn Féin-connected businessmen have also been approached by the “lone wolf” businessman.

Files obtained by the Sunday Independent show that the Northern Trust employee persuaded a number of businessmen to invest in an unsanctioned scheme.

This scheme was marketed as a basket of different shares, funds and index trackers. Projections for the scheme forecast returns of up to 180 per cent over a year. It is understood that at least one of the investors paid over large sums in cash to the rogue trader.

The paperwork for the scheme was laced with charts and projections and financial mumbo jumbo. The fund’s strategy was to “actively avail of market movements such as global timing, index futures tracking and index constituent additions and removal”.

Investors in the scheme were kept updated on its performance via emails from an official Northern Trust account and through correspondence sent out through the Northern Trust postroom. The monthly investor updates showed enormous returns with the most recent note from April 30, 2013, detailing how a €50,000 investment was worth €69,351.58, up 38.7 per cent in less than a year.

Dundalk Stadium will stage the second of their Family Fun Days next Sunday in conjunction with their matinee greyhound meeting.

The first such meeting at the end of May was a great success and it is hoped that next Sunday will be the same story. Doors will open at 3pm with the racing commencing at 4.30pm.

The children’s entertainment will be available from 3pm and is free for the kids to enjoy, including a mobile petting farm, pony rides, bouncing castles, interactive games, face painting and much more.

Dundalk’s Emma Meehan says: “We were delighted with the May meeting and parents remarked on the amount of entertainment for the children and the fact that it was all free of charge. We hope more families will join us to enjoy a great afternoon’s greyhound racing and the array of kids’ entertainment we’ve planned. There will be a special family ticket available at €15 which allows two adults through once accompanied by minors. All children under 14 are free of charge.”

The carvery will be open from 3 pm and there will be a range of hot meals and refreshments as well as a special menu for the kids.
