A Carlingford man who British authorities say was convicted for revenue evasion but failed to complete a prison term has been arrested on foot of a European Arrest Warrant.
Eugene Michael Flynn, 53, with an address at South Commons in Carlingford was arrested in Dundalk yesterday.
The European Arrest Warrant from Britain was endorsed by the High Court in Dublin on 2nd August 2013.
The court heard that Flynn had just recently returned from America where he had spent a few months visiting his son.
The court heard evidence from Garda Niall Smith, of Dundalk Garda Station, who said the warrant had been issued because British authorities said Flynn had left an open prison less than two months into his sentence of three years and nine months for fuel-laundering.
The warrant had also been issued as the British authorities wished to prosecute Flynn for escaping from lawful custody.
Counsel for the defence, Peter Maguire, told Mr Justice John Edwards that he felt there was a question over the identity of Flynn and whether he was in the fact the individual sought by the British authorities.
However, gardaí said they were satisfied as to Mr Flynn’s identity.
Mr Justice Edwards said he was also satisfied that the correct person was before the court.
He remanded Flynn in custody to appear before the court on Friday when the issue of bail will be discussed.
