Weather warning in place until midday

A weather warning is in place in the North East at present with drivers warned about snow and ice until midday.

A number of areas of the county experienced snowfall overnight with roads ungritted around Knockbridge, Louth Village and Tallanstown.

The Carrickmacross to Dundalk Road is also badly affected.

There is also snowfall on the M1 motorway on the outskirts of Dundalk and motorists are urged to take their time and allow appropriate braking distance from the car in front.

While snow has yet to fall to any great degree in Dundalk, it is causing problems on the M1 motorway.

Ardee, Dunleer and Monasterboice are amongst the worst affected areas and motorists are urged to drive with caution both on the motorway and on other affected routes.

It snowed today in Dundalk for just under an hour.

The snow started to fall around 2pm in a light blizzard style and ended around 3pm.

AA Roadwatch warned motorists in the Dundalk and Ardee areas to drive with care in the current conditions – which were reported to be worse in and around Castleblayney and Carrickmacross. Motorists were also warned about poor visibility on the M1 motorway from the Ardee and Castlebellingham heading southbound towards Dundalk.
