The signing of the Sister City Agreement between Dundalk and Pikeville
Dundalk yesterday signed a Sister City Agreement with Pikeville in Kentucky.
Representatives from the US city have been in the area this week and were shown around the area by council officials and Cllr Declan Breathnach, who took them to Skypark in Carlingford amongst other places.
The idea for the winning of Dundalk and Pikeville originated with Dundalk-born Dr Pearse Lyons, whose company Alltech is making significant investments at present in the Pike County state city.
It is understood both areas hope to learn from each other in the months ahead.
Pikeville has twice been named as ‘One of the 100 Best Small Towns in America’ and is one of the most progressive communities in the state of Kentucky. The City of Pikeville is the county seat for Pike County, Kentucky. which has a population of 63,500.
Pikeville has a university and colleges, a large medical centre, the Easter Kentucky Exposition Centre, a theatre, and is developing outdoor facilities to take advantage of its position in the Appalachain Mountains.
It is also hoped that the relationship will not only be between Pikeville and Dundalk, but also Alltech, who may make a future investment in Dundalk
Earlier this month Dr Lyons, who started out working in the Harp Lager Brewery, was named Ireland’s fifth richest man by the Sunday Independent rich list, who estimated him to have a fortune of €2.2 billion.
The 68-year-old has been looking more at Ireland of late and as well as business interests in Co Meath, he is developing a €5m distillery in Dublin’s Liberties, close to St James’ Church, where his grandfather John was buried in 1948.
