Gardaí investigating crash which seen occupants of car flee the scene

Gardaí are investigating a road crash which took place in Dundalk yesterday afternoon in which the occupants of the vehicle fled the scene.

The single vehicle collision took place around 2.40pm yesterday when a car hit a lampost at the junction of the Castletown Road and Ecco Road.

The occupants of the car then abandoned the vehicle before quickly fleeing the scene.

Dundalk Fire Service were called to assist the ESB in making the area safe, with diversions in place for a short time.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who knows who may have been in the car at the time of the crash are asked to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042 9335577.

There was sad news to start the day today after it emerged that a 25-year-old woman had died in a single vehicle collision at Castlebellingham in the early hours of the morning.

The incident happened around 2.15am on Main Street. It is understood the female driver – who has not yet been named – collided with a parked car.

Gardaí said the crash happened in very dense fog.

The woman was alone in the car at the time.

She was pronounced dead at the scene and her body has been taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where a post mortem examination will be carried out.

The road at the scene remains closed pending an examination of the area by Garda Forensic Collision investigators and diversions are in place.
