Dundalk FC offering free season tickets for primary school children

DundalkCrest2010Dundalk FC has announced that they will be offering free season tickets to primary school children, aged 12 and under, for the 2014 campaign.

As part of the process the club will be launching a new Junior Supporters’ Club in the coming weeks. This new initiative will be free to join with all members entitled to a free season ticket for the upcoming season as well as further benefits.

Chairman Ciaran Bond stated: “This has been a long-standing ambition of the board since we completed the takeover last year. With this unique plan we wish to make Friday nights at Oriel Park a more family friendly experience and to ease the burden on parents who wish to bring their kids to matches.”

General Manager Paul Johnston added: “We have recently added our former captain Liam Burns to our ranks as Schools Co-Ordinator and he will be involved in the rolling out of this project in the coming weeks. We have been visiting a number of schools in recent weeks and the interest in the club is massive in the community.

“This initiative will hopefully have the short-term benefit of making attendance at live football matches at Oriel Park much more affordable for families plus have the long-term benefit of introducing kids to supporting their local football club and set them on their way to becoming life-long fans.”

More information will be released soon on this initiative. Junior Supporters’ Club members will also be able to vote for their own Player of the Year and have the opportunities for to get involved in the club as ball-boys and ball-girls.

The Board of Management of the CBS Primary School in Chapel Street have applied to Dundalk Town Council for planning permission to build a new two storey extension onto the school.

The proposed development will consist of the demolition of 45 square metres of the existing single storey toilet block and the remove of four existing prefab classrooms.

They will be replaced by a new two storey extension, which will consist of 12 classrooms, a junior general purpose room, a library, staff room, three special education tuition rooms and all ancillary accommodation.

The proposed extension would be 2,001 square metres and would also require minor internal works to be carried out to the existing school, including a new level access ramp to the existing main entrance.

As well as the extension, the school have also applied for permission for 38 car parking spaces, 70 bicycle spaces and two junior play areas.

Transition-year students from four schools in Louth have been involved in a unique project with adults in the region to come up with prototypes for four mobile apps that aim to cross the inter-generational divide.

The SANDPiT project involved 40 transition-year students and nine adults aged in their in their 60s and 70s who worked together to co-design the apps.

The group showcased their innovations at Dundalk Institute of Technology on Friday.

The apps include an emotional well-being app, an inter-generational quiz app, a community security app, and a ‘Don’t Panic’ app to get help for the elderly quickly following a fall.

The project was run by Louth VEC and the Casala applied research centre at DKIT. Casala’s Dr Julie Doyle, who specialises in human computer interaction research, worked with the group during a series of workshops that were held over nine months.

The Louth students hail from Scoil Uí Mhuirí in Dunleer; St Oliver’s Community College in Drogheda; O’Fiach College in Dundalk; and Bush Post Primary School in Cooley. They worked with the adults to develop the apps to prototype stage.

“We mixed up the generations on the teams and it was wonderful to see how they interacted,” said Doyle.

She said that when older people are using apps, aspects such as contrast, colour and text size need particular attention.

“Our plan is to have the more relevant projects developed into fully fledged apps and a number of DKIT students will be working on this during the summer,” added Doyle.

The project has also been shortlisted for an EU GoAct award for best practice in inter-generational learning.
