IIHA call for Dundalk Ice Dome to reopen and offer to put up “half the revenue” to make it happen

Dundalk Ice Dome now lies boarded up having closed its doors in 2010

The Irish Ice Hockey Association has called for Dundalk Ice Dome to be reopened, with the organisation offering to put up half of the costs to ensure it does.

The facility at Dundalk Retail Park on the Inner Relief Road has been lying idle since closing its doors in May 2010.

However, the IIHA are now desperate to see it reopen as Team Ireland, the nation’s representatives on the global hockey stage, are at risk of losing their right to participate in international tournaments due to the fact they do not have a basic arena measuring 60×30 metres.

Since the closure of Dundalk Ice Dome almost five years ago, the team have trained at temporary facilities like the Point Village on Ice.

However, it will shut down in March after an 8-week extension was granted by Dublin City Council, partly to facilitate the Irish team. When it closes the IIHA said the team will not meet sporting guidelines and therefore lose full membership status with the International Ice Hockey Federation.

That means Team Ireland will no longer be able to compete internationally, despite some strong performances in recent years like when the team took home gold from the IIHF Championships in Luxembourg in 2010.

While many ice hockey players and figure skaters travel to the Odyssey Arena in Belfast to train at the home of the Belfast Giants, a rink is badly needed in the Republic with general secretary of the Irish Ice Hockey Association Mark Bowes pointing out to UTV Ireland this week that Dublin remains the only capital city in Europe without a permanent ice rink.

With a deadline to meet standards set for May, Mr Bowe said that the situation looks bleak “unless we can pull a rabbit out of a hat and get a rink.”

He said that the only realistic solution before the deadline would be to extend the Point Village licence on a “semi-permanent basis” or reopen the Dundalk rink – to which the Irish Ice Hockey Association would be willing to put forward “half of the revenue”.

He added: “We are continuing to work with the local authorities and government departments and we remain relentless in our efforts to find a way to achieve a permanent rink in Ireland.”

In November 2013, the IIHA’s then president Aaron Guli offered hope of the rink reopening early last year. It had been hoped that UK-based rink operator Planet Ice – who ran Dundalk On Ice in the Market Square last Christmas – would bid for the tender to run the facility from Dundalk IT, who have taken over that part of the Retail Park, including the former JJB facility.

The college had hoped to open a new sports facility at JJB last September but this has been delayed until this summer at the earliest.

Mr Bowes told UTV Ireland that despite hockey perhaps being perceived as a niche activity in Ireland, there are a lot of people seeking to play or take up the skating which would make a rink feasible.

“Anytime we open up a festive rink we see the level of commitment of people from eastern European nations [where ice hockey is popular], and even local kids, in ice hockey and skating… The demand is there.”

“Ice hockey is an incredible way to get kids out playing a sport that is both exciting and fun… But anytime we get our ice hockey programmes up and running the rink is gone.”

Dundalk on Ice brings economic boost to town centre this Christmas

506327_143668_DundalkSquareOnIceLogo.jpgThe success of this year’s Dundalk on Ice experience has led to an economic boost for the town centre this Christmas season.

To date thousands of skaters, of all ages and expertise have taken to the Dundalk on Ice rink and with the benefit of being a fully enclosed real ice facility has made it the most successful rink Dundalk has played host to.

Planet Ice who operate Dundalk on Ice have remained true to their commitment to support the local economy and as far as possible have created seasonal employment locally via the rink’s construction, staffing, security etc.

Offering a family fun experience, families and friends not only arrive into Dundalk to skate, they stay to shop and socialise, creating a additional financial spend in the town.

Martin McElligott, Dundalk BIDS said that the success of this year’s Dundalk on Ice has gone beyond expectation.

“It has been fantastic to see so many people going into skating sessions, day in, day out, whether it’s families, school groups or friends meeting up.  The enclosed rink has meant that weather doesn’t deter people from coming along.

“Plus the feedback we are receiving from the neighbouring businesses is that people are staying in the town after their skating session be it to socialise in the coffee shops, restaurants etc or to carry out some Christmas shopping.

“Dundalk BIDs is just thrilled to have played a major role in bringing this year’s Dundalk on Ice experience to life.”

McDara Hosty of Planet Ice, is also very positive of the group’s first project in Dundalk.

“We are very happy with the way Dundalk on Ice is going. We found a great seasonal workforce here in the relevant areas. There has been a very positive attitiude to what we were doing from day one and I am happy to say that from what we are hearing, is that our facility on the Market Square is boosting Christmas trade, creating a win win situation for us all.

“Now, as the school holidays start we are looking forward to welcoming thousands more to Dundalk on Ice in the coming weeks.”

Dundalk on Ice will remain open each day at the Market Square until January 4th, with the exception of Christmas Day.

Dundalk Ice Dome could be set to reopen in the New Year

EXCLUSIVE

There is a strong possibility that the Dundalk Ice Dome could be set to reopen in the New Year.

That’s according to a letter from the Irish Ice Hockey Association’s president Aaron Guli to its members yesterday.

According to Mr Guli, the arena – which has been closed since May 2010 – will be put up for tender in the New Year with UK-based rink operator Planet Ice confirming their interest in running it to the IIHA.

Planet Ice had shown an interest in reopening the rink following its initial closure three-and-a-half years ago but its then managing director, Mike Petrouis claimed at the time that the landlords of the premises did not want to meet them despite claims he had been chasing them for months.

Finnabair Estates Limited, the operators of Dundalk Retail Park, are now in receivership, with Dundalk IT having taken over the land previously occupied by the Ice Dome and JJB.

Writing to the IIHA members, Mr Guli said: “I am writing this today to inform all of our members of a meeting that myself and VP Barry O’Hanrahan had yesterday with representatives from Planet Ice.

“We spoke with John Neville the Managing Director from Planet Ice and Will Fay who is now working for Planet Ice. It was a very constructive meeting on all accounts. They gave us a general overview of their meetings earlier with DKIT and their inspection of the arena. Although there is damage from a break in it doesn’t seem to have deterred Planet Ice in their interest.

“As of now the arena will be put up for public tender sometime after Christmas. Planet Ice has informed us that they will be putting forth a bid at that time. We all certainly wish them the best of luck in winning the bid for the arena.

“There will be a lot of work involved with this process for all parties during this process. I certainly hope that all of the members of the IIHA will show positive support in getting hockey back going in Dundalk,” he said.

Planet Ice currently operates 11 ice rinks in the UK and would no doubt be welcomed with open arms to the town were they to reopen the Ice Dome.
