A registration evening will take place in Felda from 5pm to 8pm today for a charity event aimed at create a chain of people up the summit of Slieve Gullion mountain on Sunday May 4th.

With support from family, friends and the general public, South Armagh men Owen Reel and Mickey Treanor are hoping the imaginative idea can raise money for four particularly worthy charitable causes close to home.

Newry and Mourne Diabetic Group, Southern Area Hospice, Musgrave Orthopaedic Unit and the Royal Victoria Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit will all benefit from people’s participation in what sounds like a fun event.

“It should definitely be a memorable day, which can not only raise funds for the four charities but generate a bit of community spirit and create a spectacular sight,” enthuses former Meigh man Owen.

“Our plan is that the event will be held on the morning of the first Sunday in May and we want to create a chain of hands through the summit of the mountain,” explains Armagh GAA kitman Mickey Treanor.

“We’re appealing for all local people to come along and support this worthwhile event. It’s open to all regardless of physical fitness level or mobility as we can slot everyone in where it suits them.

“From initial informal contacts we’ve already got some well known sportspeople expressing an interest in getting involved and I’ve no doubt some of those will be volunteering to go further up,” said Mickey.

The fee for participating in this fun fundraiser is £10 per adult, £5 per child or £30 per family.

“The particular charities are all causes close to our own hearts for various reasons and they’re easy to identify with for the vital work which each is involved in,” said Owen.

“This event is a chance to raise some money to support that work while having a lot of fun in the process.  It’ll be a healthy way to spend an early summer’s day out in the fresh air and a great family-friendly social event.”

Anyone who cannot make tonight’s registration event can look the event up on Facebook or attend registration in the Buttercrane Shopping Centre in Newry on Saturday from 9am to 6pm or in Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry on Tuesday April 29th from 2pm to 5pm or on Friday May 2nd from 9.30am to 12 noon.
