Local boxer Amy Broadhurst won her third European Championship at the European Elite, Youth and Junior Tournament in Hungary on Saturday.

The Dundalk southpaw won European Youth featherweight gold in Keszthely after beating Italy’s Francesca Matussciello on a majority decision.

Orla Garvey, a teammate of Broadhurst’s at the Dealgan BC, and Clann Naofa’s Shauna O’Callaghan won Junior silver to add to the six bronze medals won at the tournament.

Broadhurst, who was controversially denied European Youth gold in Italy last year, reckons her eight-week training camp paid off.

“It was all worth it, European champion for the third time, went through so much over the last eight weeks,” said the ex European and European Union Junior champion.

Garvey was beaten by Russian feather Liudmilla Voransova on a unanimous decision and O’Callaghan was edged out on a split decision by Voransova’s compatriot, Ekaterina Dinnik.

Meanwhile, an appreciation night for the three local boxers has been organised for tomorrow night at 9pm in the Lisdoo and all are welcome to attend.
