38-year-old remanded in custody over Castlebellingham drugs seizure

A 38-year-old man appeared before Dundalk District Court yesterday charged in connection with a €750,000 heroin seizure at Castlebellingham on Monday night.

William O’Connell – with a rented address at The Malthouse, Castlebellingham – is charged with the unlawful possession of Diamorphine and having the drug for sale or supply at Mullin’s Cross, Castlebellingham on November 3rd.

The court was told that Mr O’Connell had a different address in Limerick on his driving licence while the car he was driving while stopped by the Garda National Drugs Unit was registered at an address in Co Armagh.

After a detective applied that the accused be remanded in custody, Judge Flann Brennan opted to adjourn the case for a week and remanded him in custody with consent to €150,000 bail, a third of which is to be lodged along with an independent surety.

Under the terms of his bail, Mr O’Connell – a lorry driver by trade – must sign on daily at Bruff Garda in Limerick and reside at his residence at Rupplagh, Glenroe, Kilfinane, Co Limerick. He was also ordered not to leave the jurisdiction and to surrender his passport.
