Dundalk FC last night announced the capture of local defender Shane Grimes.

The Muirhevnamor man, who captained neighbours Drogheda Utd last season, started his career at Oriel Park under Jim Gannon back in 2005. He remained at the club until 2008 when he was part of the side that won promotion to the Premier Division under John Gill.

The left back then moved to Monaghan Utd the following season where he excelled under Mick Cooke and was a key member of the squad which got promoted in 2011 with Roddy Collins as manager.

He then moved to Drogheda Utd in 2012, where he won an EA Sports Cup medal and also played in three cup finals in 2013.

Speaking to dundalkfc.com after completing the move, Grimes couldn’t hide his delight at re-signing for the club and is looking forward to the new campaign.

“I am absolutely over the moon. I really am. They’re my hometown club and I am really delighted to sign. I didn’t want to leave the first time and I’m just glad to be back. There’s no better feeling than pulling on your hometown jersey and I can’t wait to do that again. Playing for the club has been a dream and I can’t wait to get started back already.

“Stephen (Kenny) tried to sign me in the summer but it didn’t happen because of the situation and that. I was delighted when he rang again and was more than happy to come back. I am looking forward to the new season. I just want to win everything in front of me. The lads are all the same though. They’ll be wanting to win all the tournaments we enter and I am glad to be a part of that. It’s a new challenge for me and it’s great to be back.”
