An emergency appeal for donations to help with the current refugee crisis in Syria has been made.

Local groups are accepting donations to assist those caught up in the Middle Eastern conflict with appeals having been issued for the following:

  • Sleeping Bags and Blankets
  • Tents (Especially 4 Man Tents)
  • Heavy Duty Rubbish Bags
  • Men’s Warm Winter Clothes (Size S & M)
  • Mens Scarves, Hats and Gloves
  • Candles and Torches
  • Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Soap, Razors, Shaving Foam
  • Tissues, Toiletry Bags
  • Medicines and First Aid Supplies

The drop off point will be the Sevens office in Francis Street, which will be open to accept donations from Monday to Friday from 4pm to 10pm.

Sevens have kindly donated the office for the appeal.

Meanwhile, local company National Pen have also plans to fill a 40ft container with further details available here.

Louth woman Ailis to represent Dubai in Rose of Tralee festival

There will be a Louth woman competing in this year’s Rose of Tralee.

While the Louth Rose has yet to be selected, Omeath woman Ailis Hughes will be taking part in the event in August having been recently selected as the Dubai Rose.

A teacher by profession, Ailis entered the competition having travelled to the Middle East for work after a short spell working part-time in London.

A large number of solders from Dundalk will fly out to Lebanon at the end of next month as part of a United Nations peacekeeping force.

The Irish are currently operating alongside the Finns in a joint battalion there but the next group to travel will consist of only 181 personnel, compared with the current detachment of 330 troops.

About half of the troops set for the Lebanon are from Cathal Brugha barracks in Dublin, with the rest mainly from Aiken Barracks in Dundalk.
