St Mary’s College have cancelled their sports day, which had been scheduled for today, due to the bad weather that has been forecast.

Met Éireann has warned that there may be flooding throughout Ireland, with up to 30mm of rain predicted.

While the worst of the weather is expected to be in the South West, the school decided to take no chances and announced the cancellation yesterday evening, with texts being sent to parents informing them that classes would instead go ahead as normal.

It is hoped that the sports day can go ahead some day this week.

Weather alert issued as Dundalk Schoolboys’ League fixtures are cancelled

A status orange weather alert has been issued for the whole of Leinster and Munster from 10am to 3pm today.

Met Éireann are predicting wet and very wind weather with strong gale force easterly winds with mean speeds of 55 to 70km/h and gusts of 85 to 120km/h.

Heavy rain will lead to localised flooding and rain will turn to heavy, thundery showers later.

Already the Dundalk Schoolboys’ League have called off all scheduled fixtures for this weekend with more inclement weather anticipated over the course of the weekend.

A weather warning has been issued for later tonight by Met Éireann, with strong winds and rain expected.

A yellow weather warning is in place for Co Louth tonight, with heavy rain and gusts of up to 100kph expected.

Flooding has already been reported in a number of areas this afternoon, including at Blackrock, Gyles Quay and in a number of areas in Dundalk, including the Inner Relief Road, the Fairgreen Road and the Newry Road.

Motorists are advised to take care.

Further flooding, similar to that witnessed yesterday afternoon, remains a possibility in coastal areas of Co Louth before the weekend is out.

Today’s tide should pass without incident as it is 0.4m lower than yesterday, with winds dropping from 50kph to 15kph.

However, there are several more high tides expected in the coming days and these, combined with an incoming storm on Sunday/Monday could cause further problems.

Indeed, Met Éireann are forecasting that the current unsettled conditions could last for as much as a further week.
