Maxol refused planning permission for off licence at Dublin Road filling station

Maxol have been refused permission to add an off licence to their new filling station on the Dublin Road.

The company applied to Louth County Council in August for planning permission for the development at Southend Service Station, opposite Dundalk IT, but it has been rejected by the local authority.

In April An Bord Pleanála gave the fuel company the go ahead for the filling station, forecourt and shop with Maxol announcing that a €2 million investment would follow, with 25 jobs being created as a result. The filling station opened earlier this month.

Maxol Southend, as it is known, incorporates a Mace store and the company’s new café/deli concept Moreish.

Maxol to open new outlet in Dundalk next week

Maxol will open their latest convenience destination in Dundalk this day next week, Thursday October 8th.

The new filling station will be located at Southend on the Dublin Road, opposite Dundalk IT, and will be the 236th Maxol in Ireland.

The station will feature the company’s award-winning fresh food Moreish concept, which is the Group’s 21st Moreish café to be introduced in the space of just five months. This will include a contemporary seating area, high spec washrooms as well as complimentary Wi-Fi within the Maxol Mace convenience store. A drive-through car wash and pay-at-pump facilities providing diesel 24 hours are also available.

Commenting on the imminent opening of the new service station, Brian Donaldson, Group General Manager, The Maxol Group said: “We’re very excited to announce the opening date for Maxol Dublin Road in Dundalk and look forward to bringing a comprehensive retail and service offering to the local area and to motorists on the go. This is our fifth opening in six months, with more planned, and reflects our significant investment in Ireland over the last 24 months, in terms of new site developments and refits of existing sites.

“The new location at Dublin Road is the perfect fit for our latest new forecourt concept and we look forward to welcoming local students, residents and of course commuters to our latest Maxol convenience destination, situated at the heart of the community in Dundalk.”

In total €2 million has been invested in revamping the former Texaco filling station site, with 25 new jobs set to be created.

Maxol begin recruiting for Dublin Road filling station

Maxol have begun the recruitment process for their soon to be opened filling station on the Dublin Road in Dundalk.

The new Maxol is due to open shortly with 25 full and part-time positions set to be created.

Amongst the positions available are Supervisor/Manager, deli sales assistants and shop sales assistants.

Appeal lodged against council’s decision to grant Maxol go ahead for Ardee filling station

An appeal has been lodged with An Bord Pleanala against Louth County Council’s decision to grant Maxol planning permission for a new filling station and convenience store on the outskirts of Ardee.

Last month the fuel retailer was granted conditional planning permission by Louth County Council to redevelop the former McCabe’s Toyota Garage at the junction of the N2 and R171 Tallanstown Road at The Glebe in Ardee.

However, local businessman John Malone, c/o Stephen Ward Town Planning and Dev Consultants Ltd in Dundalk, has objected to that decision – pointing out there was already a filling station and oil depot close by.

In his appeal, Mr Malone argued the planning history establish “a very clear precedent that a development of this nature and scaled would be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.”

He said there would be an adverse impact to the lifespan and carrying capacity of the national road network, an endangerment of public safety due to increased pedestrian activity. He also argued it could be prejudicial to public health because of capacity constraints on the Ardee Wastewater Treatment Plant.

He also felt it had the potential to significantly undermine the vitality and viability of Ardee Town Centre.

Previously Aldi were unsuccessful in their attempts to open up a supermarket in this area.

Maxol given the go ahead for new filling station outside Ardee

Maxol have been given the go ahead to open a new filling station at the former McCabe’s Toyota garage outside Ardee.

The fuel retailer has been granted conditional planning permission by Louth County Council to redevelop the existing commercial site at the junction of the N2 and R171 Tallanstown Road at The Glebe in Ardee.

They are proposing to alter the existing car showroom and offices including reducing the floor area. As well as incorporating a gym in the basement they hope to modify and reduce the floor area of the Vehicle Test Centre to accommodate alterations for a proposed filling station.

The petrol station would include a shop, café/restaurant and offices and meeting rooms.

As well as the forecourt area, the site would also feature a drive thru car wash, parking, play areas and more.

The company has been given permission to install underground storage tanks, bunkering facilities and a chemical/eslan disposal point as well as altering the access point to the site.

Previously Aldi were unsuccessful in their attempts to open up a supermarket in this area.

Maxol is to employ at least 25 people at a new service station at the Southend Service Station, on the Dublin Road opposite Dundalk IT. 

An investment of around €2m will be made in Maxol Southend, which will incorporate a Maxol Mace convenience store within the forecourt and will also see the introduction of Maxol’s new café/deli concept Moreish.

Brian Donaldson, group general manager, the Maxol Group said: “We have been seeking a prime location in Dundalk to add to our three existing Maxol branded stations for some time so when this opportunity at Southend presented itself, it was the perfect fit for our latest new forecourt concept.”

The new service station is due to open in August and will bring the number of Maxol stations in Ireland to 234. 

Over the past 18 months it has been investing heavily in Ireland which has resulted in the opening of 21 new service stations and the rollout out of its new forecourt image to over 150 stations.

In January Maxol announced a new partnership with Dundalk IT as part of the institute’s Global Student Project 2015.

The cross college collaboration project will see DKIT students join forces with students from universities in USA and Australia to develop a new mobile app for Moreish, Maxol’s new convenience food and café brand.

Using digital communication facilities and on-line project management software, the teams of students will work together to design the Moreish café app for Maxol. Students will test the app among the student and staff base at DKIT, with the intention to expand its use across the 30 Moreish deli cafés that are expected to be open by the end of 2015. Potential built-in features of the app will include; food ordering, delivery, payment and a loyalty programme.

Maxol have won the right to open up a new filling station at the Southend Services Station on the Dublin Road, opposite Dundalk IT.

Louth County Council initially granted conditional planning permission for the development at the site of the former Texaco station in October last year. However, Niall Clarke Oils Ltd – who also operate a filling station on the Dublin Road – lodged an appeal to An Bord Pleanála.

However, the planning authority opted to uphold the council’s decision, deciding that the “proposed development would not seriously injure the amenities of the area, would not adversely affect the character of the area, would be acceptable in terms of parking, traffic safety and convenience and would not, therefore, be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.”

The opening of the filling station is still subject to 18 conditions being met but none should pose a problem.

Maxol hope to erect a new supermarket on the 0.25 hectare site, including an ATM, deli, ancillary stores and offices and internal and external seating areas.

There would also be a new forecourt canopy, rollover carwash, equipment store, floodlighting and security cameras, a rear compound area, underground fuel tanks, a petrol interceptor, a carwash interceptor, an aluminium clad illuminated gantry sign and associated services including drainage works and alterations to the existing access to the public road.

Fuel and convenience retailer Maxol have announced a new partnership with Dundalk IT as part of the institute’s Global Student Project 2015.

On foot of Maxol planning to open a new service station directly opposite the college in 2015, the company invited the marketing department in the college to assist in ensuring that the service station takes full account of the likely requirements of consumers in the vicinity of it.

The cross college collaboration project will see DKIT students join forces with students from universities in USA and Australia to develop a new mobile app for Moreish, Maxol’s new convenience food and café brand.

Using digital communication facilities and on-line project management software, the teams of students will work together to design the Moreish café app for Maxol. Students will test the app among the student and staff base at DKIT, with the intention to expand its use across the 30 Moreish deli cafés that are expected to be open by the end of 2015. Potential built-in features of the app will include; food ordering, delivery, payment and a loyalty programme.

The Global Students Project 2015 brings together students, staff and companies from Ireland, USA and Australia to work on a commercially focused research project. Each sponsoring business partner benefits from a dynamic cross cultural team collaborating to provide the best results. It gives students the opportunity to learn global workforce skills in real-life settings that cross boundaries and explore different cultures. The learning is rich, challenging, and exciting and is the very essence of what third level degrees should aspire to.

There are several outstanding aspects to this project, not the least of which is the collaboration between students and staff on three continents all working on it over a period of 12 weeks, through the use of digital communication facilities such as SKYPE and Google Hangout. The three teams will, literally, work around the clock during this time. The Australian team will hand over their work at the end of the day to the team in Ireland, and the Irish will do likewise (hand to USA team) at the end of their day, after which the process passes back to the Australians to start all over again.

All teams, having communicated on-line for 12 weeks, then assemble on DkIT campus in late May 2015 to present their final commercial report to their client and to participate in the official opening of Maxol’s new state of the art service station just across the road from it.

Commenting about the project Maxol CEO Tom Noonan said “This is a terrific opportunity for Maxol to get real input from a group of young people starting out on the road to exciting marketing careers. Our new outlet in Dundalk will contain all that is best in forecourt retailing but, we want to make sure that we appeal to the large young customer base that will be literally right on our doorstep. We also welcome the opportunity to have an input from people from other parts of the world. Maxol recognises the importance of continually evolving, while making sure that we give consumers exactly what they want in every community where we are represented.”

John Sisk, Marketing Lecturer and Programme Director at DKIT added: “We are looking forward to working with Maxol, an indigenous Irish business, on what we believe will be an exciting and challenging project for our global student team. The opportunity to work on a real life commercial project with students from different cultures will be an experience that will stand to all of these students in their career and personal development.”

Maxol has also confirmed it will support the costs of the DKIT team in 2016 when they travel to the USA to participate in the programme.

Maxol’s new Moreish deli cafés provide a new destination for delicious food served to eat in or on the go. The Moreish range of fresh and healthy food options includes specialty sandwiches, hot food, salad boxes and fresh fruit pots. Moreish has partnered with Bewley’s for its coffee and teas and has both barista and self-serve offerings.
