Jim Cousins RIP

The death has taken place of former Dundalk Town Councillor Jim Cousins.

A former member of the Progressive Democrats, the Ard Easmuinn man first entered politics in the early 1980s and was last elected when he claimed the fourth seat in the Dundalk No 3 constituency in the 1999 Local Elections.

He failed to get re-elected in 2004 but stayed heavily involved in local matters and was hugely influential in securing Louth’s Age Friendly status in recent years, acting as a spokesperson for the elderly on a number of occasions in his role on the Louth Older People’s Forum.

Jim was a former staff member at PJ Carrolls and also played a pivotal role in keeping ex-colleagues in touch following its closure.

He also served on the Dundalk Harbour Board, the VEC, the Health Board and many others, securing huge popularity in the area along the way.

Jim died peacefully in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital earlier today. He is survived by wife Margaret and children Karen, Mark, Stephen and Diane, as well as extended family and friends.

He will be reposing at his home at 140 Ard Easmuinn from 2pm on Friday. Removal is on Saturday morning at 10.40am to the Church of the Holy Redeemer for Mass at 11am. Burial afterwards to Haggardstown Cemetery.
