The sister of murdered Dundalk woman Irene White has called for the death penalty to be reintroduced in Ireland.

Speaking ahead of the ninth anniversary of the brutal stabbing, Anne Delcassian said tougher sentences are needed to stop women being “butchered in their own homes”.

Separated mum-of-three Irene was found in a pool of blood in her home in at Ice House in Dundalk on April 6th 2005 by her elderly mother, who died the following year.

Although members of Irene’s family say they know who is responsible for her death there has been no breakthrough in the case.

Anne told The Irish Daily Mirror she has come to the conclusion that we need tougher sentences in this country.

“Ireland is behind the times with our legal system,” she said.

“Over 200 women have been murdered since 1996. It’s absolutely scandalous.

“And so many families who I have spoken to are actually calling for the death penalty to be brought back to deter these people from acting in the way that they have.

“I certainly would call for it myself. When I think of how Irene was left on that kitchen floor for my mother to find on April 6 – It was outrageous.

“If you are willing to kill another human being then you must face the fact also that this could happen to you as well.

“It certainly would act as a deterrent. Our resources are overstretched and people are losing confidence in our protectors.

“Women are literally just being butchered in their own homes and often by somebody they know.”

Irene, 43, was found stabbed to death at her home after she returned from taking her children to school on April 6, 2005.

Gardai and the family believe the killer was hired to murder Irene by someone known to the mum.

The family have issued a number of appeals for help and substantial rewards have been offered to anyone with information leading to the killer’s capture. However, no one has yet been charged.

Despite this Anne has never given up hope of getting justice.

The sister of murdered Irene White has spoken out in the wake of yesterday’s news that a major breakthrough has been made in the eight-year-old murder investigation.

Anne Delcassian has warned her sister’s killers that “your time is up”.

She made the statement after it emerged in yesterday’s Irish Daily Mail that an Irishwoman living in Australia had contacted gardaí with crucial evidence about the 2005 stabbing at Ice House Hill.

Reacting to the news, Delcassian told The Irish Mirror that she was “delighted” with how things were progressing.

“I would like to say to the killers that time is running out,” she said.

“It would be better to come in and say what you know, rather than running around and hiding. You’re not going to get away with it.”

The Australian-based woman who has come forward with vital new evidence is reported to be an ex-girlfriend of the man suspected of stabbing the 43-year-old mother-of-three to death on April 6th 2005.

Gardaí now plan to arrange for her to be interviewed by police Down Under where she can provide a statement.
