Smurfit Kappa have also donated 850 boxes.

Those who wish to donate can do so during the day at the pop up shop in the Long Walk Shopping Centre or at Dundalk Tourist Office. The Sevens taxi rank in Francis Street will also accept donations daily between 4pm and 10pm.

Local boxer Amy Broadhurst won her third European Championship at the European Elite, Youth and Junior Tournament in Hungary on Saturday.

The Dundalk southpaw won European Youth featherweight gold in Keszthely after beating Italy’s Francesca Matussciello on a majority decision.

Orla Garvey, a teammate of Broadhurst’s at the Dealgan BC, and Clann Naofa’s Shauna O’Callaghan won Junior silver to add to the six bronze medals won at the tournament.

Broadhurst, who was controversially denied European Youth gold in Italy last year, reckons her eight-week training camp paid off.

“It was all worth it, European champion for the third time, went through so much over the last eight weeks,” said the ex European and European Union Junior champion.

Garvey was beaten by Russian feather Liudmilla Voransova on a unanimous decision and O’Callaghan was edged out on a split decision by Voransova’s compatriot, Ekaterina Dinnik.

Meanwhile, an appreciation night for the three local boxers has been organised for tomorrow night at 9pm in the Lisdoo and all are welcome to attend.

Dundalk’s clash with Cork City to go ahead on Sunday if Champions League dream ends

DundalkCrest2010Dundalk FC’s clash with Cork City will go ahead at Oriel Park this Sunday July 26th if Stephen Kenny’s side are knocked out of the Champions League by BATE Borisov on Wednesday.

Should the Lilywhites progress to the third qualifying round then the game with the Leesiders would not go ahead as Dundalk would then turn their attention to a trip to either Wales or Hungary on Tuesday July 28th.

Should the Cork game proceed it will have a 6pm kick-off.

Dundalk face trip to Wales or Hungary if they overcome BATE Borisov in Champions League

DundalkCrest2010Dundalk will face a trip to either Wales or Hungary if they can overcome BATE Borisov on Wednesday to advance to the third qualifying round of the Champions League.

A trip to Galway also lies await in the third round of the FAI Cup.

This morning’s Champions League draw in Nyon paired Stephen Kenny’s side with the winners of the clash between The New Saints and Videoton.

A 1-0 win at Oriel Park next Wednesday would see the Lilywhites advance to the next stage and earn a €1.2m pay day.

Videoton – who are based in Székesfehérvár, in the west of Hungary and about an hour’s drive from the capital Budapest – lead TNS 1-0 from the first leg in Wales earlier this week and would be favourites to advance. Either the Welsh or Hungarian side would be at home in the first leg, with the return leg taking place in either Ireland or Belarus, depending on who advances.

The third qualifying round ties are played on 28/29 July and 4/5 August.

Were Dundalk to beat BATE and overcome either TNS or Videoton in the third qualifying round they would then face a play-off to reach the Champions League group stages. Progression that far would see the Lilywhites join Manchester United, Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen, Sporting CP and Lazio in the play-offs, the draw for which is on August 7th.

Five play-off winners would then go through to join the 22 teams already through to the group stage: Barcelona, Bayern München, Chelsea, Benfica, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Zenit, PSV Eindhoven, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Porto, Arsenal, Manchester City, Sevilla, Olympique Lyonnais, Dynamo Kyiv, Olympiacos, Galatasaray, AS Roma, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Wolfsburg and Gent.

A victory over BATE would guarantee a shot at the Europa League play-offs should they fail to progress beyond the next stage. Victory over BATE and then Videoton or The New Saints would earn Dundalk €5.4m and even were they to miss out on the Champions League group stages, defeat would put them automatically into the group stages of the Europa League.

Meanwhile, Dundalk will face a trip to Eamonn Deacy Park in the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup third round.

The draw was made today in Sligo and is a replica of the draw for the EA Sports Cup semi-final between the two sides, which takes place on Monday August 3rd.

Dundalk have already beaten Tommy Dunne’s side twice this season in the league – 3-0 at Oriel Park and 4-2 away earlier this month.

The FAI Cup semi-final is presently scheduled for the weekend starting Friday August 21st.
