The church among the trees is the Parish Church of St Nicholas, affectionately known locally as the Green Church. The Long Walk Shopping Centre and Carroll Village can also be seen, as well as the Marist Church, Coláiste Rís school and the CBS primary school.

Walking tour of Seatown planned

The Old Dundalk Society will host a walking tour of Seatown on Thursday August 28^th.

Archaeologist Paul Gosling, a native of Dundalk who now lectures in Built Heritage at the Department of Heritage and Tourism at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, will lead the walk through one of the oldest parts of town.

The tour will commence from the Green Church at 5pm and will take around two hours.

It will deal with street names, street alignments and layouts and the role of prominent buildings such as the windmill, Seatown Castle, Quay Street railway station and St Leonard’s Garden.

Giro d’Italia to be broadcast on big screen at the Market Square on Sunday

Spectators at the Market Square will be able to watch the Giro d’Italia on the big screen

The Giro d’Italia will be broadcast to the waiting crowds at the Market Square in Dundalk on Sunday, big screen owner Martin McElligott has confirmed.

This means that while Dundalk crowds gather in the main streets to welcome the Giro d’Italia to the town centre, they will be able to see how the race is progressing from its start that morning, including the sprint from the Armagh Road, finishing at the Green Church, before enjoying the historic spectacle of the hundreds of top cyclists speeding through the Square, out of Dundalk and on towards Dublin.

The screening of the Giro d’Italia will continue through to the race’s arrival in Dublin.

Speaking of the broadcast, Martin said: “Many people are playing their part in welcoming Giro d’Italia to Dundalk and Photospeed in the Long Walk Shopping Centre is happy to play its part in sponsoring the live broadcast, which we are sure will add to the atmosphere of what is going to be a fantastic day for Dundalk.”
