Dundalk garden designer Paul Martin has won a gold medal in the Show Garden category at the prestigious Hampton Court Flower Show in London.

Vestra Wealth’s Vista is a smart, modern garden for a contemporary home.

Various levels and layers of planting and hard landscaping surround a dining terrace with a cantilevered cedar table.

Gabions are surrounded by copper and packed with split timber, which helps to encourage wildlife.

Clipped box lawns are used as alternatives to grass, with one of the lawns supporting a cedar water channel that cascades into a copper pool beneath.

The planting has large drifts of verbena, nepeta and lavender, with a colour palette of purples and blues to create a cool atmosphere on a hot summer’s evening.

Paul has previously won gold medals at the likes of Bloom in the Park and and was a silver medallist at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Dundalk is set to receive a jobs boost after 25 new positions were announced at Crumb Rubber this morning.

The Dromiskin-based company, which was established in 2003, recycles end of life tyres. It takes them completely out of the waste stream, turning them into new products.

Crumb Rubber is the only facility to produce a full range of rubber granulate and matting in Ireland. This cradle to cradle process produces Eco-innovative products for the agriculture, horticulture, construction, child care, equestrian, leisure, golf and sports industries.

All Crumb Rubber’s product are guaranteed Irish and include coloured rubber landscape chips for gardens, landscaping and play areas, granulate rubber for arenas, gallops, walkers, artificial playing pitches and poured in place surfaces.

The company currently employs 24 people at their plant in Dromiskin, with this morning’s announcement effectively doubling the amount they employ.

The jobs were announced by local TD and Minister for State Fergus O’Dowd this morning, with MEP Mairead McGuinness and Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick also in attendance.

The Google mapping car is reported to be in Dundalk today.

They must be going to update the street view of Dundalk on Google Maps. The last mapping took place over four years ago in May 2009 and a trip down popular streets such as Park Street is like a trip back through time with stores on view such as Mr James, D’Arcy Flowers and Oscars Pub which have all since either closed up or changed hands.

There’s alos a view of Ridley’s before it was renovated and the old Tara Bar before it was converted to Eden/The Garden.

Bloom 2013 got underway today in the Phoenix Park and local gardener Paul Martin has already picked up a gold medal for his large concept garden ‘The Kerry Group/Concern 1,000 Days Garden’ in association with Concern.

Paul has delivered a dramatic Zambian landscape, growing Irish and African foods, which tells the engaging story of 1,000 Days and underpins the importance of kitchen gardens in feeding women – the world’s frontline hunger champions – and children.

Local rugby star Rob Kearney was amongst a number of people who helped Paul prepare the garden for the opening event, which took place earlier today.

The Bloom 2013 event runs until Monday June 3rd and will also feature Danucci-Ferdia Chocolates from Ardee, who will be displaying their products at the Love Irish Food marquee.
