Order of Malta Dundalk seeking new recruits

orderofmaltaLocal voluntary service Order of Malta Dundalk is looking to recruit new members.

The appeal for new recruits comes after demand for the service increased by over 20% in the last two years.

The Order of Malta is open to all. The service meets on Monday nights from 8pm to 10pm each week in Mill Street. The cadet unit is looking for members between the ages of 10 to 16 years while the senior unit is recruiting for ages 16 and up.

The Order of Malta is a charity that devotes its time to voluntary, community and first aid services. First aid duties include working at locations such as football matches, horse races, nightclubs and concerts. Community duties include hospital transfers and nursing home visits. The charity also provides public first aid courses.

In 2014, the Dundalk Order of Malta carried out a total of 199 duties. 113 of those duties were first aid services and 86 of these duties were community services. There was a grand total of 2,025 man hours, which is slightly more than the previous year.

“It has been an incredibly busy year for us with hundreds of duties in the community. We urge young people and adults to join for a really rewarding experience,” said David Caldwell, PRO of the Order of Malta.

“Being a member of the Order of Malta voluntary service to me is a privilege, helping people, learning vital skills and meeting new people all make it so rewarding and enjoyable,” added local student Erica Murphy, who has been a member of the Order for the last two years.

There is no experience required to join the Order as everyone will be trained. This training ranges from basic level first aid all the way up to EMT (Emergency Medical Technician). Some of the vital skills covered in this training are CPR, using a defibrillator, spinal immobilisation and basic slings and dressing.

The Friary Youth Club to host quiz night tomorrow

The Friary Youth Club’s annual quiz takes place this Thursday night at 8.30pm in Byrne’s Pub on Hill Street.

The event has been organised to raise funds for a defibrillator with a table costing €25 on the night, including refreshments

The Friary Youth Club (FYC) is a non-profit making organization which relies heavily on donations and fundraising events such as this to fund its weekly activities, equipment and leader training in areas such as first aid and child protection.

First aid course in Haggardstown this week

An occupational first aid course will take place in St Fursey’s National School in Haggardstown this week.

The course takes place over three days – Thursday November 20th, Thursday November 27th and Friday November 28th – and is health and safety approved.

First aid course in Haggardstown next week

A three day FETAC level five Occupational First Aid Course will take place in St Fursey’s NS on the Marlbog Road in Haggardstown next week.

The course runs from Wednesday to Friday September 24th-26th and costs €250 to enrol in.

Manual handling course being held in Dundalk next week

The charity also provides public First Aid courses. In 2013, the Dundalk Order of Malta carried out a total of 198 duties. 128 of those duties were first aid services and 80 of these duties were community services. There was a grand total of 2,352 man hours, which is a leap of 500 hours from last year.
