Dundalk-born singer Sharon Corr has called on the public to honour female heroes in their own lives with a special ‘hero’ card or gift.

Sharon, who acts as Oxfam Ireland’s ambassador, said the vital and often heroic role played by women in the lives of others should be recognised.

Oxfam Ireland’s Heroes Campaign is being supported by a number of inspirational Irish women, including former president Mary McAleese. ‘You Are My Hero’ cards are available online at www.oxfamheroes.org, priced at €5.

Sharon said her mother Jean, who died of lung disease a number of years ago, was and always will be her hero.

Sharon is currently in the US on a world tour with her new album ‘The Same Sun’ and said the title track was inspired by her trip to Tanzania visiting Oxfam’s women’s rights programmes.

“Going to Tanzania was a truly life-changing experience. It reinforced for me the power of women to change the world,” Sharon said.

“No matter what challenges they might face and the obstacles in their way, women will do everything they can to overcome them for the good of their family and community,” she said.
