Dundalk Schools’ Leinster bid ended by Newbridge

Louth crestDundalk Schools’ bid for Leinster Colleges glory was ended by Newbridge Patrician School at the Ramparts earlier today on a 1-10 to 0-11 scoreline.

The local side got off to a bad start in their quarter-final tie as the visitors opened with a goal and two points inside the opening five minutes before Dundalk finally got off the mark through Tadgh McEneaney in the eighth minute.

A missed goal chance and five wides were then to prove costly as the Kildare school went off 1-6 to 0-4 ahead at the break.

Within nine minutes of the second half Newbridge had extended their lead to six points but despite a brave late Dundalk fightback, which seen them close the deficit to two, they could not find what was needed to take them into the last four.

The starting 15 on the day was Fergal Sheeky (Dundalk Young Irelands); Hugh Osbourne (Naomh Fionnbarra), Dan Rice (St Patrick’s), Jack McGailey (Dowdallshill); Niall Craven (Geraldines), Kevin Carr (Newtown Blues), Sean Matthews (Sean O’Mahony’s); Matt Corcoran (Geraldines), Alan Dunne (St Brides); Stephen Coleman (Clan na Gael), Adam O’Connor (St Joseph’s), Colin O’Connor (De La Salle); Sean Marry (St Brides), Tadgh McEneaney (Kilkerley Emmets), Stephen McCooey (St Mochta’s).

Dundalk Schools triumph over Wicklow

Dundalk Schools ran out 3-11 to 2-9 winners over Wicklow Schools in the Leinster Post Primary Schools A Championship at the Ramparts today.

Following on from their victory over Carlow before Christmas, the local side – with the wind at their backs – got off to a dream start when a Stephen Coleman point was followed up with a goal from Colin O’Connor.

The left half forward would then add a further two points as the home side raced into a 1-7 to no score lead after 19 minutes.

That laid the foundation for a 1-9 to 0-3 lead at the break and although Wicklow began to eat into the lead on the restart an early goal gave Dundalk huge hope.

Tadgh McEneaney then made sure of the victory late on with a fine goal to ensure the hopes of Leinster glory live on.

Dundalk Schools enjoyed a superb 0-16 to 1-9 extra-time victory over Carlow Schools in the first round of the Leinster Post Primary Schools A Championship in Dr Cullen Park this afternoon.

Two points from Tadgh McEneaney following a Colin O’Connor opener had the visitors going off level at the break on a scoreline of 0-3 apiece.

Stephen Coleman then briefly put Dundalk in front on the restart before a Carlow goal on 32 minutes put the home side in the driving seat.

Within four minutes Dundalk were back on level terms. McEneaney then traded points with his opposite number before the home side surged two points clear in the 53rd minute with two points in as many minutes.

A point from McEneaney left just the minimum between the sides with just a minute left, however, before the same player leveled matters in the third minute of stoppage time to take the game to extra time at 0-9 to 1-6.

First blood on the restart went to Carlow but after McEneaney leveled once more, Kevin Carr fired over to put Dundalk back in front.

Evan Quigley then doubled that advantage before Carlow replied to leave just a point separating the sides at half-time of extra-time on a 0-12 to 1-8 scoreline.

It was largely one way traffic in the second half as O’Connor tagged on two further points either side of a Sean Marry point before Carlow raised their first, and only, flag of the half.

Dundalk were to have the last say, however, when the excellent O’Connor fired over to claim a fine win.

Dundalk Schools suffered a disappointing 1-17 to 1-10 defeat at home to Wicklow Schools in the first round of the Leinster Post Primary Senior Football A Championship in Pairc na nGaeil this afternoon.

The home side had made a good start to the game with three points from Tadgh McEneaney, two from Dara Hamill and another from Daniel McKeown helping them to go off level at the break on a 1-6 to 1-6 scoreline. The goal came from Dean Maguire, son of former Louth Minor manager Kieran and brother of inter-county star Derek, who celebrated his 18th birthday only a few days earlier.

Wicklow upped the ante in the second half though with five unanswered points at the start of the second half.

Despite their best efforts, Dundalk never recovered from that setback with the visitors going on to record an easy win in the end.
