Dundalk Mavericks rebrand as the Louth Mavericks

louthmavericksLocal American Football side the Dundalk Mavericks have rebranded as the Louth Mavericks.

The change was made to reflect the growing interest in the club from around the county and to help it to continue to grow.

The Mavericks will remain based at Dundalk IT but will now promote the sport throughout Louth.

Chairman Aidan Maguire explained the decision in a message on the club’s website.

It read: “From the early beginnings in the frosty month of November 2012 to this present day, the Dundalk Mavericks have grown from strength to strength, on and off the field.

“From the early practice sessions with just 7 players, Coach Matthews, Mulvihill, Shevlin and Hagan kept going, kept persevering every Sunday, through the coldest of days and the hottest of days, until a squad of over 30 players took to the field on a sunny day in April 2014 against The South Kildare Soldiers for the Mavericks’ very first competitive game.

“Two seasons have passed since then and I believe that The Mavericks have gained the respect of their peers within the league. Within the local Dundalk community The Dundalk Mavericks became a well known sporting name quickly. Not an easy task to do while in the shadow of two great successful teams, Dundalk FC and Dundalk RFC. However, our fan base grew from match to match with attendances reaching up to 140 supporters at times. Great support from a great community for a great new sport.

“It was during our second season that we realised that we had garnered interest from people throughout County Louth. We recruited and signed lads from Drogheda and surrounding areas and in turn, our fan base started growing with people outside Dundalk following and supporting us. This led to what has happened today.

“It is with great honour and excitement that I can inform you that the Dundalk Mavericks are rebranding as the Louth Mavericks. We are still based at the excellent facilities at DKIT, but we now look forward to promoting the great sport of American Football in every part of The Wee County.

“We felt that due to the popularity of the sport and the interest surrounding the Mavericks within Louth, that this was the best road to take for the progression of the club. A club that one day will be a title challenger, a title winner and a great role model for the younger members of our communities.

“Why a Bull Logo? Louth is the land of Irish Folklore, The Brown Bull of Cooley is a story we all grew up with and loved. This bull was a symbol of power in this region, something the Mavericks will become. Secondly, keeping with an American theme, a Maverick is an unbranded calf on a ranch.

“We are still the same team but we are growing as a group with the addition of new coaches, new players and new assistants. We look forward to promoting and building our club in every part of Louth.

“At this moment we are still an 18 years and over kitted American football team. With the continuing growth of the club, we would hope to expand and start up a Louth Maverick Flag Football Team for players 16 years plus in the near future. We will then look to progress into other areas.

“Lastly, we could not have got this far as a club in such a short space of time without support. To all the Maverick players, friends and family, to anyone who assisted the club in anyway, to everyone who came to a training session or played a game for us, to our league opponents over the last two years, to the league body and to our past and present sponsors namely Brubaker’s Bar, Kehoes Bar, Controlsoft Automation Systems, Greene Financial and Lally’s Electrical to name but a few. Also to McNulty Designs for his excellent graphic designs and assistance in the past and during this rebrand. I thank you all for making this happen for us. You are all part of our strong foundation. We promise to do you proud in the future.”

Action from Dundalk Mavericks’ victory over South Kildare Soldiers on Sunday

The Dundalk Mavericks returned to action at the DKIT sports grounds this past Sunday in their final home game of the season. A week removed from suffering a heavy loss to the very impressive Tyrone Titans in Omagh, the Mavericks faced a strong South Kildare Soldiers team who they defeated 15-6 in the opening game of the season.

The Soldiers themselves needed a victory after handing the Galway Warriors their first win the week before. Before kickoff the Mavericks suffered a huge blow, when powerhouse running back Kristapps Blums suffered a serious foot injury during the pregame warm-up.

Not daunted by this, the Mavericks defence took to the field to start the game. Strong pressure from the defensive line and linebackers quickly put the ball back in the hands of the Mavericks offense. A new look offense saw Matty Hagan switch from wide receiver to under centre and started strong, making good yards. However, the Soldiers defence stood robust and possession was exchanged multiple times in the first period.

Late in the first quarter following a South Kildare punt, the Mavericks took over possession deep in their own territory. Stern blocking from the offensive line coupled with strong runs from the running back tandem of Robbie Caldwell and Conor Rice marched the Mavericks up the field. This long drive rewarded the Mavericks with the 1st touchdown of the game as quarterback Mattie Hagan ran in for the score. Hagan then converted the extra point to give the Mavericks at 7-0 lead at the end of the first.

The second quarter continued in the same vein as the Mavericks made use of their running game to good effect. However, when they needed it most the Soldiers dug deep and halted the progress. Not to be outdone by their offensive teammates, the Mavericks defense lead by captain Jamie Lally continued their relentless pressure on the South Kildare offense. Possession continued to be exchanged between both teams until half time with neither being able to capitalise.

Dundalk received the kickoff to start the second half and reverted back to the strong running game that worked so well in the first. The offensive line continued to hold strong giving the running backs ample opportunity to gain yards. As in the first half, this paid off as the Mavericks took the ball from deep in their own half with some brilliant runs by Rice and Caldwell. It was Rice this time that crossed the line to get his first touchdown of the season and the Mavericks second of the day. The extra point was missed but the Mavericks took a 13-0 lead going into the final quarter

The Soldiers defence increased the intensity in the last quarter in an attempt to halt the impressive Mavericks run game. Both sides held firm and neither were able to cross the whitewash again. With less than two minutes left to play, the Mavericks offense added a field goal to give them a 16-0 lead. This proved to be the final score of the game and gave the Mavericks the win and their second consecutive shut-out at home.

Team captain Declan Mulvihill spoke at full time and mentioned the relief at bouncing back from the Tyrone defeat. He added that every player had improved and their eyes are now firmly on the upcoming away game in Galway.

Mavericks left tackle Aidan Maguire added: “The Soldiers gave us a hell of a game and we expected that. It’s great to see the sport growing in the town and seeing 80+ spectators on the sideline and local businesses like Kehoes get behind us.”

The Mavericks next game is against a resurgent Galway Warriors team in GMIT in 3 weeks’ time. Providing they get a favourable result, the Mavericks will get the opportunity to avenge last week’s defeat against the dominant Tyrone Titans in the IAFL 2 Championship Game on August 17th.

Dundalk Mavericks prepare to take on Tyrone Titans

-1

Following last month’s 15-6 victory over the South Kildare Soldiers in the IAFL-2, the Dundalk Mavericks take to the field again this weekend to face the Tyrone Titans.

It will be the first ever home game for the Mavericks as they hope to build on a solid start to their campaign. Their opponents also won their first game last weekend, defeating the Galway Warriors in a 36-0 rout and look to provide a stern test for coach Sarah Matthews’ team.

The Mavericks will hope to build on the strong special team’s performance shown in their first game which resulted in touchdowns for Ruairi MacArtain and Guntis Vitolins. It appears that the key to success will be stopping Tyrone quarterback Daniel Mullan who threw for 130 yards and two touchdowns against Galway in addition to 110 rushing yards.

The game kicks off at 12.30pm on Sunday at the DKIT Sports Grounds and admission is free. Why not bring the whole family down to cheer on your local team in one of Ireland’s fastest growing sports?

With the possibility of road restrictions in the area due to the Giro d’Italia, the Mavericks would advise all spectators to enter the DKIT grounds at the Inner Relief Road entrance beside the Crowne Plaza.

The Dundalk Mavericks’ preparations for their debut Irish American Football League season took a massive leap forward recently when the club was approached by StatSports, a local sports science company, about working together.

The club was asked to trial the latest sports equipment due to hit the NFL next season. StatSports, who work with the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United and the Ireland Rugby team on a daily basis, came down to fit the Mavericks players out with the very same equipment that will be monitoring NFL stars next season.

Club Chairman/Coach Robert Shevlin said this was a huge coup for the club and the IAFL as a whole.

“StatSports have given us great insight into our own team game and  each individual player’s performance and we were delighted to be involved with them,” he said.

The StatSports team will be taking the sample data provided by the Mavericks Stateside in the coming weeks as they look to expand their operation to include the NFL.

In a statement last night, the Dundalk Mavericks said they would like to thank the Stat Sports team for the exceptional data they provided the coaches and players with and wish them the best of luck as they venture into the NFL this season.
