Dealz have announced that their new Dundalk store will be bringing 28 new jobs to the town.

The discount retailer, which trades in the UK as Poundland, will shortly open its doors at Earl House, the former National Irish Bank building on Earl Street.

The jobs announcement was made this morning to coincide with the launch of another Dealz store at Merchant’s Quay in Cork, which will provide 22 jobs.

The store opened its doors this morning, with the bulk of positions already filled.

The building has undergone massive renovation in recent months.

Dealz – which sells a range big brand items at discount rates – currently has over 30 stores in Ireland, with their West Street store in Drogheda the closest to Dundalk before now.

The new Dealz store in Earl Street is on course to open in the next few weeks after the scaffolding surrounding it was removed yesterday.

Work has been ongoing at Earl House, the former National Irish Bank’s Dundalk branch, for some months but it appears that the bargain retailer are now set to move in, with staff having started working on site since last Monday.

No exact date for the opening has yet been revealed although it is expected to open its doors by the end of the month.

Thanks to Damien Wynne for sharing this picture of things taking shape at Earl House on Earl Street.

Work on the former National Irish Bank and Revenue Commissioners’ building on Dundalk’s main pedestrianised street has been ongoing for several months. Now though, it appears the builders are close to finishing up, with the marble work and naming of the building clearly visible.

Discount retailer Dealz is set to occupy the bottom retail units when the builders vacate it. It had been hoped that they would be open at the end of this month but no exact date has been confirmed as yet.

One of Dundalk town centre’s prime retail units is on the verge of being sold after being marked sale agreed by local auctioneers DNG Duffy recently.

The 8,115sq ft former Tommy Hilfiger store at 7 Earl Street went on the market last year with an asking price of just under €500,000.

Previously owned by PJ McKenna of McKenna Man, it is believed that the unit has been sold to a local investor for below that price.

The store, which includes a ground floor and basement unit, is one of the most prominent in Dundalk and will become the only vacant unit on Earl Street when Dealz opens their new store at the former National Irish Bank branch later this year.

Meanwhile, DNG Duffy are also close to concluding a sale for the office building at 1 Roden Place – a three storey over basement building – which had been on the market for €130,000.

Two Dundalk stores closing

544142_546592562030152_1925607413_nThere was bad news on the retail front in recent days as one shop closed and another announced its intention to.

Val-U-Centre, located at the former Jack & Jones and Vero Moda outlet on Clanbrassil Street, has now shut down.

The move is likely to be motivated by the decision of Dealz to open in the former National Irish Bank building in Earl Street later this summer.

Meanwhile, Heaven in the Marshes Shopping Centre also plans to shut its doors and is hosting a closing down sale at present. Everything is €15 and under, with the store not due to close for a couple of months yet.

Heaven has been in business for 10 years but the boutique’s online store www.vavavoom.ie will continue trading after the closure.
