Double success for Dundalk Cricket Club

dundalkcricket clubDundalk Cricket Club enjoyed another weekend of double success, with both teams securing comfortable wins at home.

On Saturday, the first team, currently battling Swords for the league title, secured a 115 run win against Longford. Electing to bat first, Andrew Pike and Michael Hughes dug in but it soon seemed Dundalk were in trouble. At 63/5, Longford had the upper hand but a stellar innings from Phil Osborn, backed up by the sleek hitting of Sanjay Kumar powered Dundalk to a fine total of 217 from their allotted 40 overs. Man of the match Osborn finished 88 not out, but it was Kumar’s 37 that kickstarted the innings, the pair putting on 82 for the sixth wicket.

Longford’s chase began disastrously, with opening bowler Andrew Williams combining with Kevin Waterman for a catch off the first ball. Williams then repaid the favour twice-over, taking two catches for Waterman, whose 4-31 ripped apart the Longford batting line up. Longford were always on the back foot and Conan Martin wrapped up the win in the 29th over, giving Dundalk a crucial full bonus point win.

The following day, the second team cruised past Phoenix CC in overcast conditions. Batting first, Dundalk started slowly, and lost Derek Turner to Theo Dempsey’s bowling with just 7 on the board after 10 overs. However, Phoenix couldn’t capitalise and Dundalk put on 99 for the second wicket, with man of the match Glen Armstrong smashing his way to a first half century, the highlight of which were two huge sixes straight down the ground. Peter Phillips anchored the other end, playing a very intelligent innings for a career-best 38. Big-hitting cameos from Jiwan Jodhani and Faheem Khan pushed Dundalk past 150, before Michael Mullen slogged 18 off the penultimate over to set up a convincing total of 193.

The breakthrough in Phoenix’s innings came from a brilliant Derek Turner run out followed up by Sanjay Kumar sending James Maginninis back to the pavilion for a golden duck. Dempsey solidified the innings for the Dublin outfit, but wickets fell around him as he was caught in the deep by Kumar off Mullen’s bowling. Kapil Pun finished off the rout, taking three wickets in quick succession to wrap up the game for Dundalk, with Armstrong capping off the day with a superb one handed catch at mid off. The result leaves Dundalk precariously poised in the race for promotion, with second-placed Balbriggan travelling to Dromiskin next Saturday.

On Friday last, Dundalk Cricket Club played out a very enjoyable double-header under the hospitality of North Kildare Cricket Club.

There were notable performances with the bat, with Glen Armstrong, Ian McEvoy, Michael Mullen and Gerry McKeever reaching the retirement score. Deborah Challoner, Eddie Bosano-Andrews and Ulrich Ofterdinger all stood out with their bowling. However, it was a unanimous post-match decision to award man of the match to Catherine Raftis, who took her first senior wicket in the game.

On Saturday, Dundalk 1st XI took on Slieve Bloom CC in Dromiskin. Slieve Bloom started the game well, but great bowling from Conan Martin (3-47) and Lethin Mathew (3-35) restricted them to just 141. Dundalk wobbled at the start of their run-chase, losing Andy Pike in the first over but clinical batting from captain Mike Waterman (25), Lethin Mathew (40) and Sajan Jayaseelan (73 not out) gave Dundalk a comfortable seven wicket win and cemented their place at the top of the table.

On Sunday, Dundalk Seconds completed the remarkable weekend with a 45-run win over Clontarf in Mount Temple.

Dundalk had a shaky start to the game, losing 4 wickets in the opening overs before Kapil Pun (16) and Aijaz Ali (14) solidified the innings. However, Dundalk still looked uncertain on 79/9 before a massive 67-run last-wicket partnership from Sanjay Kumar and Seamus McDermott, which gave Dundalk a defendable total of 146. Two early wickets from Glen Armstrong (2-18) removed the Clontarf openers before Dundalk were pegged back by an Abdul Kahn half-century. Khan’s dismissal from Dundalk captain Tom Ryan started the collapse for Clontarf, with Ryan picking up figures of 4-13. Fiachra McDermott briefly offered resistance before being caught by McDermott off Mullen’s bowling to keep the Seconds in contention in the league.

Dundalk Cricket Club youths enjoy top class training session

-1

On Friday morning, Dundalk Cricket Club received a visit from Cricket Ireland coaches who ran a very successful training session for the juvenile members.

Three of Ireland’s top cricket coaches Reinhardt Strydom, Fintan McAllister and Brooke Hepburn made the trip down the M1 and engaged the players with a wide variety of fun skill games and drills, as well as providing expert advice to the older members on their batting, bowling and fielding techniques.

The great weather contributed to the productive atmosphere and a great time was had by all. Unfortunately, the weather deteriorated over the weekend and the Dick O’Neill semi-final clash against North Kildare was called off on Sunday morning. The match will be refixed for some time in the coming weeks.

Training continues for youths on Tuesday, 6pm-7.30pm, with all new members welcome. Any information can be found on the club’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/DCCYouths. Senior training remains on Wednesdays, 6pm-8.30pm, ahead of two games coming this weekend. On Saturday, the 2nd XI are away to Balbriggan in Division 15, while on Sunday the 1sts take on Slieve Bloom at home, with both games starting at 1pm. All welcome, see www.dundalkcricketclub.com for more details

Clinical Dundalk rally to victory in dramatic finish

Dundalk Cricket Club’s 1st XI travelled to South Dublin to face Railway Union in a top of the table clash on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Having won the toss, captain Jiwan Jodhani elected to bat and sent in openers Michael Mullen and Lithen Matthew. Direct bowling from Railway kept Dundalk under wraps and they struggled to a modest 47/3 from 20 overs. However, after the drinks breaks, Sajan Jayaseelan and Andy Williams took the initiative and began to pick apart the bowling. Both fell to quick wickets and Dundalk seemed to lose their foothold before Phil Osborn solidified the innings, making strong partnerships with Scott McDonnell and Glen Armstrong. A cameo run-a-ball 12 from Anjani Bhandari pushed Dundalk to a below-par 143 from their 40 overs.

As usual, Dundalk proved resilient in the field and restricted Railway’s run chase in the opening overs. Few chances came until Armstrong latched onto a mix-up between the batsmen and ran out Ryan Abbott. Sanjay Kumar then shone with the ball and forced G Sihra into playing on to Jayaseelan at mid off. Railway regrouped and seemed to take control of the game, waiting patiently and taking quick singles.

The breakthrough finally came for Dundalk when spin bowler Michael Mullen clean bowled opposition captain Nick Jagoe. Dundalk took advantage as Railway cracked under pressure, aided by another mix up in running out Alex Stiles. As Railway got desperate, Ifty Sabir made a quick fire 28 before his luck ran out, getting caught by Matthew off Bhandari’s bowling. The game was balanced on a knife-edge, with Railway needing just 10 runs from 3 overs, with 4 wickets in hand.

They succumbed to the pressure of Mullen’s consistent bowling and a two remarkable catches left them needing 7 from the last over with 2 wickets. Mullen kept pressing and took career-best figures of 5-20, removing the final two batsmen to send Dundalk to hysterics and the top of the table.

On Saturday, Dundalk 2nds came up against Merrion. Despite a marvellous effort in the field, bowling the Dublin outfit out for 127, Dundalk lost early wickets and never recovered, eventually coming up short by 20 runs. Glen Armstrong was the stand out performer, taking three wickets and top-scoring with 22.

Training continues on Tuesdays for youths, 6-7.30pm in Dromiskin while senior training remains on Wednesdays, 6-8.30pm. On Friday, Leinster coaches will be paying Dundalk CC a visit for youth coaching clinics, beginning at 10.30am for u11s and 1pm for u15s. All players welcome, contact www.dundalkcricketclub.com or www.facebook.com/DCCYouths for details.

Busy weekend for cricketers

dundalkcricket clubWith a lack of competitive action this week, Dundalk Cricket Club took advantage of the summer weather to hold two friendly matches hosted in Dromiskin. On Friday night, they faced a Louth Hospitals XI while on Sunday, the Taverners took on the Theatrical Caveliers.

Louth Hospitals’ captain Sajan Jeyaseelan won the toss and elected to bat first. In a big-hitting innings, they made a grand total of 162 from their reduced 18 overs. Bilal and Jeewan Uragoda top scored scored with 41 and 32 each. The wickets were evenly shared between the Dundalk bowlers, with Jiwan Jodhani excelling as wicket-keeper, taking a remarkable 3 stumpings.

In response, Dundalk captain Waleed Shahid sent in Michael Mullen and Ian Chong to open the run chase. Mullen and Jodhani anchored the innings whilst keeping on top of the run rate and seemed to be setting the foundations for victory until Dundalk’s hopes were dashed as Jodhani was bowled in the 12th over by Sunjay Kumar. Despite Mullen pushing on to a swashbuckling 71 not out from under 50 balls, they fell just a few runs short of the total. All in all a very enjoyable night for everyone involved.

On Sunday, the Taverners team played the Theatrical Caveliers, a collective made up of cricketers involved in the performing arts. Played very amicably in the spirit of the game, the Caveleirs won out eventual winners by a dramatic 10 runs.

Electing to bowl first, Dundalk began brightly, with Brian Mullen and Anjani Bhandari taking early wickets, both enticing the batsmen to nick the ball to stand-in wicketkeeper Michael Mullen. Liam Gaynor completed the top-order carnage by removing Elliot Moriarty with a majestic diving catch. With wickets drying up, Dundalk needed a moment of brilliance to rejuvenate the innings, which came courtesy of a Daniel Chong direct-hit to run out Caveliers’ dangerman AJ O’Brien. After their allotted 25 overs, the Caveliers set a convincing total of 127.

Mullen opened the batting again, partnering Bhandari, both of whom kept the Caveliers on the edge until the latter fell in the 5th over. The scoreboard kept ticking over nicely for Dundalk with Gerry McKeever and Ulrich Ofterdinger at the crease. Unfortunately, Dundalk couldn’t reach the target and finished agonisingly close on 117.

Dundalk return to competitive action next week, having drawn Laois away in the quarter finals of the Dick O Neill cup. Youth training continues at the ground in Dromiskin on Tuesdays, 6-7.30. Senior training takes place 6-8.30 on Wednesdays, with everyone of all ages and abilities welcome. For more info, visit www.dundalkcricketclub.com or www.facebook.com/DCCYouths.

Two wins in three days for Dundalk Cricket Club

Kalkeran Kieran

Kalkeran Kieran

Dundalk Cricket Club have had good reasons to celebrate this week with two remarkable wins in the space of one week.

The 1st and 2nd teams had both been in the doldrums this season, the 1st team have had only one win all season in Leinster Division 8 and the 2nd team only two at the beginning of the season in Division13, both were sitting in the relegation zone.

Things took a dramatic turn for the better on the bank holiday Monday of 4th August when the 2nds faced Rush 4. There was some history to this fixture Dundalk 2 had faced Rush 4 in the opening match of the season and been comprehensively beaten so Dundalk were out to exact revenge and it came in devastating manner.

Having won the toss, Captain John Finnegan elected to bat and sent in the proven opening partnership of Kalkeren Kieran and Mike Waterman. A steady start was dismantled after Waterman was bowled by A. Neary for 6 and Kieran followed a short while later on 2. Boomeswaran Shanmugam stepped in at number three and made a great contribution the innings, top scoring with 25 before being run out looking for a quick single. Waleed Shahid and Derek Turner steadied the ship for Dundalk, the pair keeping their wickets before departing for 7 and 12 respectively. After Shahid was bowled by O Marsh, Dundalk collapsed on themselves, losing 4 cheap wickets in a row, three of them ducks. Samuel Dhinakaran and Kevin Waterman valiantly batted on a 10th wicket stand but the run out of Waterman left Dundalk stranded on just 74 runs.

After tea, it appeared that the game was dead and gone for Dundalk, with one of their lowest totals of the season, but an exceptional display with the ball from Lethin Matthew and from the team fielding as a whole secured a vital win for the home side.

Matthew dispatched the first two batsmen both for zero, bowling maiden after maiden, piling on the pressure for Rush. When Shanmugam trapped Rush captain An Ellison lbw in the fifth over, the advantage had swung in Dundalk’s favour. When Matthew picked up his third, fourth then fifth wicket it was, it was clear that Rush were going to be on the losing end. Pressure reached boiling point for Rush quickly, and they paid the price for it, with Michael Mullen combining with Finnegan to run out three batsmen in the field, while Kevin Waterman put them to the sword on the crease, sealing a famous victory for Dundalk.

The final score Dundalk 2nds 74 all out for Rush 4ths 35 all out a winning margin of 39 runs and enough to pull the team out of the relegation zone, if there are further wins in the remaining weeks of the season it should see the side stay up.

On Wednesday 6th August it was the turn of the 1st team, who were playing North Kildare 2nds in the semi-final of the Dick O’Neill Cup.

The opening pair of Jiwan Jodhani and Waleed Shahid did not last long, Jodhani bowled by a beautiful delivery from the pace blower Andrew Chase in the 3rd over of their innings. Dundalk failed to make any impact in the early overs of the match with wickets falling consistently, although the partnership of Boomee Shanmugam and Shahid began to grow as the pair top scored with 38 and 24 respectably. The partnership was broken in the middle overs of the game and the rest of the batting order struggled to make much impact on the total score, Dundalk being bowled out for a below average score of 99.

Play continued after drinks as North Kildare openers Lucy Small and Sean Dalton got off to a fast start, picking up the singles rather easily from Division 8’s leading bowler Andrew Williams. Williams bowled extremely well, and set a fast tempo to begin with. Defending a low total of 99 was never going to be easy for the Louth side, Captain Neil O’Callaghan bowling tidily as he finished on 0-25 from his 4 overs. The skipper then decided to bowl youngster Kalkeren Kieran, who went on to bowl the well set opener Dalton and then trapped the big hitter Chase lbw in his following over.  At that stage it looked like the match was firmly in the balance, but in T20 cricket the batting side are usually in control, it wasn’t to be this time around. There was a slight scare for Dundalk in the closing stages when two consecutive boundaries were hit off bowler Sajan Jeyaseelan, who fought back well to take the wicket next ball. Dundalk continued to set high standards in the field as Scott Mc Donnell saved a certain four in the closing overs of the match which may have ended with Dundalk on the wrong side of the result. Shanmugam went on to hold his nerve in the final over of the match and send Dundalk into their first ever cup final.

The final score was Dundalk 1sts 99 all out for North Kildare 2nds 88 all out and a win by a narrow 11 runs.

Dundalk have historically not fared too well in cup competitions and this is their first time in any kind of final.

The final itself takes place on August 17th and Dundalk will face either Laois or Galway.

There should be enough momentum now for both sides to go onto further wins and although the chances of league success are now unachievable there is a real possibility that the club will be able to put the Dick O’Neill Cup in the trophy cabinet.

Dundalk Youths cricket game finishes in a tie

The scorebook is checked and rechecked as the game draws to a close

The scorebook is checked and rechecked as the game draws to a close

An intense final over of the first Dundalk Youths T20 saw the game finish out as a tie after a marvellous effort from both teams in an enthralling game that swung back and forth throughout, last Friday evening in Dromiskin.

Led ably by captains Rosie Cousins and Jessica Doherty, who commandeered teams ‘A’ and ‘B’ respectfully, the game went down to the wire, with the entirety of the huge crowd sweating over each and every ball as the game narrowed to a close.

Defined as a friendly warm up for the teams before the first inter-club games, it was anything but for the players with even the toss being watched and waited on with bated breath. Cousins won it and elected to field first, on a shortened and quick outline on the Green Road-based pitch. Opening the bowling for Team A was vice captain Ryan Kirk who limited Team B’s opening batting partnership of Doherty and Hazel Williams throughout the first few overs. Eventually the two girls got into their rhythm and started slotting runs together before making the compassionate decision to retire not out to allow their teammates a chance to knock willow on leather.

Breakthrough came for team A soon after as father and son pairing of Brian and Leo Mullen came onto the bowling attack and took wickets in quick succession, bowling out Paul and Keely O’Connor. Again, team B dug in with the sibling-partnership of Euan and Shona Finnegan, who batted excellently before also taking the sporting option to retire. Mark showed some of his developing batting class when he came in, only for Kirk to take a diving catch off Daniel Chong’s bowling to send him back to the pavilion.

For the last few overs in the game, Josh Challoner and vice-captain Michael Mullen totted up the runs for Team B, putting together some great running between the wickets to add a profitable score to the board at the close of innings. The final batting total Team B amassed was 61 for the loss of 3 wickets.

After the short drinks break, team A were sent in to bat. Opening batsmen Gerry Mc Keever and Leo Mullen went out all guns blazing from the start, the former striking some magnificent boundaries before being bowled by Williams in the third over. Leo Mullen suffered the same fate the next over, his wicket taken by Doherty. In a moment of pure class, next batsman Elle Mae Tremewan was run out by Louise Challoner with a direct hit from mid-wicket, handing Team B the advantage for the first time. This was helped on by Michael Mullen’s dismissal of opposing captain Cousins just a few overs later.

Just as Team B did before, Team A battled hard over the next few overs with Catherine Raftus and Fiona Lennon proving their all-round abilities by taking some quick singles and defending their wickets well. Something had to give, though, and it came in the form of another run out, this time from John Finnegan, who got out Lennon after the riskiest of quick singles. Raftus joined her partner on the side couple of moments later having fallen afoul to Williams’ reintroduction, nicking the ball to Finnegan behind the wicket.

Just when Team A looked set to cement a lead, things began to fall apart for them. Chong couldn’t translate his recent run of form into runs, succumbing to the experienced Fergie Boyle, caught brilliantly by Euan Finnegan at short fine leg. Order was restored as Kirk came to the crease, a calming influence on the erratic nature of the innings so far. He was just a bit too calm for the final delivery of opposite vice captain Mullen, however, leaving an outswinger to graze his off stump. Pressure was building on the batting team again and another wicket came as a result, this time Eddie Bosano-Andrews was unfortunate to nudge a ball behind, into the grateful gloves of wicketkeeper John Finnegan.

The scene was set for a grandstand finish, with Catherine Marcus and Brian Mullen batting superbly in a final wicket stand. Keeping to the run rate, the pair needed 4 runs off the last over to clinch victory at the death. Michael Mullen was given the ball to bowl and his varying fast bowling caused all sorts of problems for his namesake at the other end for three of the final six deliveries. On the fourth, to add a twist to the tale, it was deemed wide by the umpire and then left the batsmen he target of three runs from three balls to win.

Both Mullens remained stoic under huge pressure in the field and great excitement on the boundary, as batsman Brian calmly leaving two full length balls bowled outside his off stump by Michael. For the final ball of the innings, and the match, Brian skilfully cut across the ball, sending it beautifully between the gap in the fielders before sprinting the final two runs, leaving the game miraculously drawn after twenty overs each.

Despite calls for a “Super Over” the game remained a tie, a just result after a highly captivating game which will remain long in the memory of all involved on the night. The Youths Committee, who organised the game, wishes to thank all those involved at the match, especially umpires Brendan Watters and Ian Chong, scorer Deborah Challoner and all the parents and members who came out to spectate. They also wish to congratulate all the players who contributed to such an absorbing game and are currently drawing up plans for a rematch and possibly a series.

The cricket season is now well and truly under-way for Dundalk and the two senior teams are experiencing a two very different starts.

The club’s ground has undergone a major revamp for the 2014 season with the installation of an artificial pitch on the oval, this brings them in line with the majority of Leinster clubs and is a sure sign of a commitment to the game in the town.

The 2nd XI kicked things off at the start of the season with an away match to Rush 4  on Saturday 26th April, this was the 2nds first season in Division 13 having been relegated last year after spending two seasons in Division 12.

Rush having won the toss chose to bat first and posted an impressive 283 for 5 wickets, although this was a tough prospect for the 2nds they responded well with a 153 all out, this was a high score for the 2nds and considering there were a number of new members plus the quality of the opposition faced (which included some former and current under age Ireland internationals) it can be considered a respectable effort.

The 1st XI kicked off their season the next day 27th April, this again was an away match this time against Malahide 4 at the new International Cricket ground in Malahide Castle. Malahide batted first and through a combination of bowling and fielding skills the 1sts managed to have them all out for 198, a score that should have been well within reach of a team that hold two Leinster titles. Unfortunately poor batting let down the 1sts and they were skittled for 40 all out, a very bad start to the season which can only be attributed to lack of practice.

The 1st XI’s first home match on the new surface took place the following weekend on Saturday 3rd May against Meath neighbours Knockharley 2, the 1st XI in an effort to take home advantage batted first but once again posted a very low score for a senior team at this level being all out for 88, a marginal improvement on the previous week but still not good enough. The visitors then had an easy time of it and were able to knock of the required runs in around half the allotted overs and were easy winners at 92 for 6.

The 1sts next match was to have taken place against YMCA 4 on Sunday 11th May at home but was cancelled due to the road restrictions caused by the Giro. The team are currently sitting at 8th place out of 9 in Division 8, unfamiliar territory and one needing some serious improvement.

The next matches for the 2nd XI couldn’t be more of a contrast, commitment and practice have paid off in spades. the 2nds next match was at home against the much fancied Adamstown 4.

Adamstown chose to bat first and some spectacular bowling and fielding had them all out for a remarkable 39 runs !.

In responding Dundalk’s second team were able to knock of the required runs in only 9.4 overs scoring 92 for the loss of only two wickets, a remarkable 8 wicket win as short a time as possible.

Riding the momentum the 2nds next match was again at home on Saturday 10th May against Dundrum 3, again a much fancied team from one of the newer clubs, things were a little tighter this time around but the 2nds managed another victory by 10 runs.

In three matches the 2nds have equalled the number of wins for the whole of last season and they currently site at number 5 out of 9 in Division 13, if things carry on at this rate they must be serious contenders for a Leinster title in 2014.

The next matches for both teams are:

1st XI

Sat 17 May 2014 The Hills 3 Away 12:30 Division 8
Sat 24 May 2014 Civil Service 2 Away 12:30 Division 8
Sun 01 Jun 2014 Wicklow County 1 Home 12:30 Division 8

2nd XI

Sat 24 May 2014 Sandyford 3 Away 12:30 Division 13
Sun 15 Jun 2014 Knockharley 3 Home 12:30 Division 13
