Cooley Kickhams have received a boost in the build-up to Sunday’s County Final against the Newtown Blues after Patrick Sheelan was cleared to play in the game.

The former Louth U-21 player scored 1-2 in his side’s semi-final victory over the O’Connells but a late red card in that game put his participation in the final in doubt.

However, Sheelan last night had the red card rescinded, leaving him free to line-out in Drogheda on Sunday as Cooley look to claim a first Joe Ward Cup since 1990.

The Newtown Blues will meet Cooley Kickhams in this year’s Louth SFC final on Sunday week after overcoming St Patrick’s by 1-10 to 1-8 in a semi-final replay in Haggardstown last night.

The result will see the Drogheda outfit meet Cooley for the first time in a senior championship final since 1981. It also means that Pat’s have been denied a three-in-a-row – a result they would have no doubt dedicated to club man Adrian Donohoe, who was murdered in January of this year.

The Pat’s had led by six points after 11 mintues but the 22nd minute dismissal of Shane Hynes helped the Blues to get on top with a Hugh McGinn penalty just after the break proving to be decisive.

Cooley had booked their place in the final a week earlier, having seen off the O’Connells on a 2-9 to 0-9 scoreline.

The peninsula outfit are aiming to win their first Joe Ward title since 1990 while the Blues last won the Louth SFC title in 2008 and will be aiming for their 20th triumph this year.

It’s another big weekend of GAA action in Louth this weekend with the line-ups for the senior and intermediate football championship finals set to be determined.

After Stephen Moonan’s late point earned the Newtown Blues a replay last weekend, the Drogheda side will go head-to-head once more this Friday night with St Patrick’s in Haggardstown.

Both sides will be slugging it out for a place in the September 29th Joe Ward final against Cooley Kickhams, who booked their place in the decider last weekend following a 2-9 to 0-9 win over the O’Connells.

Throw-in at Haggardstown on Friday is at 8pm, with admission just €5.

Meanwhile, the line-up for the Intermediate final will be decided on Saturday following a double header in Dowdallshill.

Geraldines will take on Roche Emmets, followed by St Joseph’s v St Brides, with admission for this double header just €10.

It promises to be a great weekend of action.
