Dundalk FC are hoping to expand the capacity of Oriel Park for next Wednesday’s Champions League second qualifying round second leg tie with BATE Borisov by installing an additional 1,000 seats in the ground.
The club have today applied to UEFA, via the FAI, for permission to erect a temporary stand similar to the one installed at the Carrick Road venue for last October’s title deciding league fixture with Cork City.
Strict UEFA criteria means the capacity at the ground is restricted to 3,200 but the club is seeking dispensation after seeing tickets sell out, leaving hundreds of fans disappointed.
When Cliftonville hosted Celtic in the 2013 Champions League, they were allowed use a temporary structure similar to what Dundalk are proposing.
But Cliftonville cleared the red tape well in advance of their game and time is likely to count against Dundalk with the home leg just six days away.
