The death has occurred of former Dundalk FC goalkeeper Christy Barron.

Christy was a member of the 1963 league winning side that brought the championship back to Oriel Park after a gap of 30 years.

Rated as one of the league’s best goalkeepers, he started out at Dublin junior club Talbot Utd before playing for Drumcondra for two seasons.

He was 21 when he signed for Dundalk in the 1959-60 season and would help the Lilywhites to a second ever league title in 1962-63 behind a back line that include John Murphy, Patsy ‘Tootsie’ McKeown, Timmy Lyons and Tommy Rowe.

He would spend sevens season at Dundalk, making over 250 appearances, and winning the club’s first Player of the Year award in 1963-64.

He would later go on to become a referee.

During his time in Dundalk he worked in Backhouse’s Butcher shop in Dundalk and would go on to qualify as a meat inspector in the UK which he worked at before retiring in 2002.
