Gaffney double deals Dundalk’s title hopes a potentially fatal blow

Rory Gaffney’s double put a huge dent in Dundalk’s title ambitions last night

Dundalk’s title ambitions suffered a potentially fatal blow at Oriel Park last night after Stephen Kenny’s side went down 2-1 against Limerick FC.

A first half double from Rory Gaffney did the damage as the Shannonsiders beat the Lilywhites for the second time this season to leave Dundalk six points off leaders St Patrick’s Athletic with just four matches remaining. Indeed, last night’s defeat even meant that Sligo Rovers overtook the Carrick Road outfit as Pat’s chief pursuers.

The visitors took the lead on 17 minutes in a move that started after Dundalk has lost possession in midfield. Stuart Bradley’s pinpoint pass was met on the volley by Rory Gaffney, whose effort was enough to find the net despite Peter Cherrie getting a hand to it.

Gaffney then doubled his tally for the game and the season shortly afterwards when he latched onto a ball out of defence by Patrick Nzuzi to race through on goal before slotting past Cherrie yet again.

Dundalk had a couple of chances to get back in the game but close range headers from Kurtis Byrne and Pat Hoban failed to test Barry Ryan despite them both being unmarked.

The Lilywhites were thrown a lifeline on 68 minutes, however, when Sam Oji handled in the box and Richie Towell made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-1.

In truth, Dundalk never looked like getting an equaliser despite the 2,018 in attendance being lifted by the spot kick.

With Pat’s having a superior goal difference over Dundalk, the difference between the sides is effectively seven points. At this stage it’s a long way back for Kenny and his side.

Dundalk: Cherrie; Rossiter, Boyle, Gartland, Massey; Dillon (Mountney 54), Shields (Keegan 83), Towell; Meenan, Hoban, Byrne (Mulvenna 59).

Limerick: Ryan; Nzuzi, Folan, Oji, Williams; Bradley, Gamble, Hughes, Tiofack (Kelly 71); Gaffney, Curran.

Referee: Derek Tomney (Dublin).

Missing weather probe turns up on the other side of the Irish Sea

A weather probe that went missing over Dundalk Bay has resurfaced on the other side of the Irish Sea.

The device, which was released by Armagh students a month ago, included a basic computer, video apparatus and data recording equipment and was carried by a helium filled balloon.

The students issued an appeal in August for its return when it got lost over Dundalk Bay on its descent having floated 120,000 feet to the edge of space.

Dundalk Search and Rescue and local fishermen were involved in the search for the instrument but it has finally been found – washed up among rocks on a beach in Anglesey, north Wales.

A teacher from the school in question said it took about three weeks to float across the sea.

The good news is that while some of the equipment is damaged, the data should be intact.

Crowds outside News &Deli in Park Street last May when the initial tickets went on sale

Queues are starting to form outside News and Deli in Park Street ahead of the release of One Direction tickets at 10am tomorrow.

The scenes are similar to those witnessed last May when people waited outside the local Ticketmaster outlet for more than 24 hours ahead of the release of tickets to the band’s shows in Croke Park next summer.

The former X Factor contestants have announced a third date on Friday May 23rd and tickets go on sale for the gig at 10am tomorrow.

Last time out, Sevens put on a bus to provide shelter to those queuing overnight.

Also on sale tomorrow morning are tickets to Daniel O’Donnell at the Convention Centre. It’s unlikely the queue at News and Deli is related though.

Dundalk hoping to bounce back against Limerick

BVCjzhFCQAE58sP

Dundalk will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways following last week’s 2-0 defeat against St Patrick’s Athletic when they host Limerick FC at Oriel Park tonight.

The Lilywhites need to win to keep the pressure on the Inchicore side, who moved six points clear at the summit following a 3-1 win over Bray Wanderers last night.

Manager Stephen Kenny has admitted that Dundalk will need to win all five of their remaining league games to have a chance of winning the league so victory is vital against a Limerick side who came from 2-0 down to beat the Lilywhites 3-2 in Thomond Park earlier this season.

Win, lose or draw, Dundalk will have little time to rest as they host Derry City on Monday night as well.
